Actually, that question ("is it really Voldemort?") has been answered as definitively as we're likely to get in the Author's Notes - which are being posted in the author's FFnet profile, then deleted and replaced when the next chapter hits, so as to work around the author's interpretation of some of FFnet's rules. The Author's Note for chapter 20 (which is currently up) goes into some degree of depth on the point.
