RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - Labster - 01-23-2026 It has been a full year since Trump was inaugurated now. And of course, in the middle of "inauguration" is "augur". So it's time to consider my predictions from the past, and read the entrails which are all that remain of our democracy. These predictions were supposed to be a little "out there" -- basically, implausible things that are only just plausible because these people are both idiotic and evil. I'll go through each of them.
I don't think I got a bingo for 2025, though I did mark a lot of boxes. Better luck next year! I'll come up with a new card soon. Only three people have been given a standing ovation in that room: Nelson Mandela, Володимир Зеленський, and now Mark Carney. Trump has now threatened 100% tariffs on Canada. The leader of the free world, Mark Carney, has not yet responded. Also ICE shot another terrorist immigrant in Minnesota dead. It turns out that he was a ICU nurse working at a government veterans hospital. He was openly carrying a gun under his open carry license, proving his intent. This goes to show you that they're everywhere. If you see someone on the street acting in any manner whatsoever, please report to your nearest ICE office. Remember, Night Watch, I mean ICE, are the guys you can trust. RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - robkelk - 01-30-2026 'Minnetoba'? Some Minnesotans want to join Canada as tensions flare with Trump administration Yes, I know that there was a US Supreme Court decision saying they'd need permission of all of the other states, but Supreme Court decisions are as transient as the one in Roe v. Wade. RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - Labster - 01-30-2026 Petition created to help Denmark ‘buy California from Trump’ passes 250k signatures I, for one, am looking forward to our new Norse overlords, and their healthcare for all. Good pastry and membership in the Schengen area. The government in Borgen seems more functional than the one in The West Wing. Lower tariffs with most of the world means cheaper prices and open markets for agricultural export. I'm not really seeing any downsides. RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - classicdrogn - 01-30-2026 At least it's not France. Everyone would need to learn how to speak croissant then. RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - Labster - 01-31-2026 I already know how to laugh in French, hon hon hon. New bingo card time! RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - robkelk - 02-01-2026 "FIFA World Cup 2026 relocated out of US": tricky... but, according to what Perplexity tells me, just barely possible. It would be a scaled-dawn event, something akin to a Superb Owl event than a full-sized FIFA World Cup affair. Canada currently has games scheduled in BMO Place in Toronto and BC Place in Vancouver. We could squeeze FIFA-sized games into Rogers Centre ("SkyDome!!") in Toronto, Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, and (for risk-takers) the Olympic Stadium in Montreal. Mexico currently has games scheduled in Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, and Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, with Estadio Azteca being larger than all of the other stadiums listed here so they'd get the finals. They could squeeze FIFA-sized games into Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City. Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara, and Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla Seven smaller stadiums replacing eleven larger stadiums. The Carribean can't help: their largest stadium, National Stadium in Kingston, Jamica, would need massive upgrades to even approach the capacity of Estadio Cuauhtémoc or Commonwealth Stadium. "Freedom Pastries" lacks the alliterative appeal that "Freedom fries" had. "Freedom Flakies", maybe... no, wait: Flakies are Canadian. Never mind. RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - Norgarth - 02-01-2026 "Trump revealed as Antichrist" and his 'Christian Nationalist' followers don't care, since they pretty much act the opposite of Christ's teachings anyway. "Just barely possible" is the sweet spot for what I'm trying to do with these cards, otherwise they won't be any fun. There's one box where I cheated, "Americans dress up as pedophiles for fun", because it was so very unlikely, but has already happened this year. Why US cinemagoers are dressing as Jimmy Savile to see 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. "Should somebody tell them what he did?" That's the kind of year we're having so far. RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - robkelk - 02-16-2026 U.S. House votes against Trump's tariffs on Canada Simple majority, not two-thirds majority... but there were a half-dozen GOP reps (one each from California, Colorado, Kentucky, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and Washington) who voted in favour. RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - Norgarth - 02-16-2026 I've heard that Michigan Reps from _both_ parties were speaking out against Trump holding up the Gordie Howe bridge opening too. RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - robkelk - 02-19-2026 Person named in Epstein files arrested. Head of state says "Let me state clearly: the law must take its course." That's the U.K. head of state, mind you. Looks like kings have a use after all, even if it's just to set a moral example, considering this one won't act to shield his own brother. Trivium: This is the first time that a U.K. royal has been arrested since Cromwell's Parliament arrested Charles I. RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - Dartz - 02-19-2026 As a point of order, Mister Windsor is not a Royal anymore. Indeed, he is just the Andrew formerly known as Prince. Nonetheless, it is depressing that he is being arrested not for raping minors, but for leaking confidencial UK government information to Epstein while he was an active public servant. THAT they take seriously. If they get new evidence of him raping minors, they can always charge him with that later RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - robkelk - 02-20-2026 U.S. Supreme Court finds Trump overstepped authority in imposing tariffs under emergency law Not all of the tariffs, but a bunch of them. His Orangeness has responded by levying a new 10% tariff across the board. RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - Bob Schroeck - 02-20-2026 Naturally, Trump left his big-boy pants in Mar-a-Lago and threw a tantrum because the Court didn't roll over for him and let him do whatever he wanted. Predictably he called them "disloyal to the Constitution". (Meaning, of course, that they were disloyal to him.) RE: The Imperial Presidency, Part 2 - Labster - 02-20-2026 I feel like things have been slowing down lately out of the White House. Like over the past, say, two or three weeks Trump himself really hasn't been screwing things up so actively. Passively, sure. He did talk about awarding himself the Congressional Medal of Honor. And slept through his Board of Peace meeting, of course. I'm starting to think that this is the beginning of the end. And he is too, given how much he's been talking about getting himself into heaven. Note that his approach "doing enough for God", doesn't get the basics of Christian doctrine correct -- it's only by God's grace that we cross over, because we're all failures. The big test here coming up is next Tuesday's State of the Union address. Can a man in the grips of dementia complete his big speech to Congress, or make any sense? In theory, his people could do it 1800s style and just send Congress a letter. But it's hard to see a man who thrives on public adulation doing that. It may be hopium, but this speech might turn out much worse than Joe Biden's disastrous debate performance. The weird thing is that I'm still not sure what comes next. We could have a circumstance where everyone agrees that the leader is mad, but are too afraid to try to remove him due to midterm elections, and blame the speech on the Democrats instead. That is in the realm of possibility. Or maybe the speech just goes okay after all? |
