The "97-year-old gone back to his youth" thing is IAWIA; "97" is a very specific age to use, and is the same as Xander's in that story.
The train station is just a method for doing so from another Potter fic or two.
Oh, and the confusing the plotline thing is just the whole change to the Pettigrew-Black situation.
