- Bob Schroeck - 04-06-2010 Ord, there's a word or two missing from that, so I'm not quite sure what you're asking. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - ordnance11 - 04-06-2010 I edited my last post Bob. __________________ Into terror!, Into valour! Charge ahead! No! Never turn Yes, it's into the fire we fly And the devil will burn! - Scarlett Pimpernell - Bob Schroeck - 04-06-2010 You know, I don't think I've ever been asked that. Certainly not in this round of job hunting. If I were, I'd probably go with something safe that mixed socially open with dedicated to the job, perhaps hiding a job virtue (say, tendency to focus extremely tightly on work) as a self-perceived fault ("I sometimes get too deep into what I'm doing and miss the social stuff around me.") -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - CattyNebulart - 04-07-2010 When they ask how others see you they ussualy want to know a few things. 1) You are not a raving egomaniac. 2) You have a sense of humor. 3) You can deal with questions that don't have a good answer under pressure. 4) You are convincing. 5) How you see yourself. 6) How good you are at self-evaluation. (Note; Humans are not, if you are any good at this you should probably be in a padded room, but humans tend to believe they are good at this.) What exactly from those above they are looking for and how it's weighted depends on a lot of factors. They rarely will take your answer at face value, otherwise it would be to easy to say 'As a god among men who deserves a two billion dollar yearly salary.'. On the other hand if you can convince them of that you probably are and do. Seriously it's like the question 'Does this make me look fat?' that is not a yes or no question even though it looks like one. Similarly this is not a question on how others see you but one on how you see yourself, and how you answer is more revealing than the answer. E: "Did they... did they just endorse the combination of the JSDF and US Army by showing them as two lesbian lolicons moving in together and holding hands and talking about how 'intimate' they were?" I figured I'd rather give an honest answer..depending on what they said about me of course *grin* What came back was uniformly this: Quote my ex-boss Very loyal (a rare quality I subscribe to no one..but I do to you) Funny, he'd let me go, but I do understand why he had to do it. The others said the same thing. The humorous thing the my favorite supervisor said is that one of my points for improvement is that I'm so loyal that if someone crosses me that it then there is no forgiveness. I think I remember the incident that sparked that remark. One of the contractor's workers locked me in inside a containment while I was doing clearance work and they didn't let me out until almost 3 hours later. He denied anyone of his people doing. I smelled a rat at that point and I was pushing for nailing his hide and his company to the wall for that incident. She (my supervisor) was pushing me to back down, primarily for the stink it would raise. I finally gave in, but I felt betrayed. I always thought you took care of your people before profit. We never had the same easy going relationship after that. Ah well... __________________ Into terror!, Into valour! Charge ahead! No! Never turn Yes, it's into the fire we fly And the devil will burn! - Scarlett Pimpernell Now we wait..Aaaargh! - ordnance11 - 04-10-2010 I looked back on the job announcements where I was passed on the the hiring officials. They have 45 business days from the close out date to make a selection. The close out date was the 2nd week of March. They notified me on the last week of March. The date they need a body for the slot is NLT than June 1st from my reckoning. So that means the interviews will start probably from the 1st and 2nd week of May. Aaarrgh! This is testing my patience! __________________ Into terror!, Into valour! Charge ahead! No! Never turn Yes, it's into the fire we fly And the devil will burn! - Scarlett Pimpernell - Bob Schroeck - 04-10-2010 Found an interesting job opening today... the New York Times is looking for a "Creative Technologist". I don't have every skill they want, but I tried my best to sell myself and the skills I do have. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. Okay, I'll bite - ordnance11 - 04-10-2010 What are the duties of a "Creative Technologist?" __________________ Into terror!, Into valour! Charge ahead! No! Never turn Yes, it's into the fire we fly And the devil will burn! - Scarlett Pimpernell - robkelk - 04-10-2010 Obviously, working with Creative Technology... -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. Adversaries remain citizens of the same state, common subjects of the same sovereign, servants of the same law." - Michael Ignatieff, addressing Stanford University in 2012 - Bob Schroeck - 04-10-2010 Actually, it's in the group that deals with online advertisers -- the specific position builds unspecified "prototypes" (probably for either services or complicated ads) for advertisers, as well as plays a major part in generating and developing ideas. I'd like the job, it sounds fun, but I lack one of the requirements -- a portfolio of past work. That may prove a bit of a handicap. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - robkelk - 04-10-2010 (looks at copy of GURPS I.S.T.) Bob, you do have something that shows off your creativity and ability to work within constraints. It just isn't a gadget. -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. Adversaries remain citizens of the same state, common subjects of the same sovereign, servants of the same law." - Michael Ignatieff, addressing Stanford University in 2012 - Bob Schroeck - 04-10-2010 Um. Well, I believe they mean more in the way of website design. And mine wasn't intended as a showpiece, so it has the bare minimum of stuff needed to make it do what I want. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. Just got another bite. - ordnance11 - 04-14-2010 I passed the HR screening for the EPA for Environmental Engineer/Physical Scientist intern position at Washington D.C. On to second stage. They considered the first 75 candidates for 2 positions. So assuming it's down to 10 to 15 candidates for the position, I got about a 10 percent chance...all things being equal. I have the feeling I'll be a busy boy in May. Most of the federal jobs I'm applying has to be filled by June. __________________ Into terror!, Into valour! Charge ahead! No! Never turn Yes, it's into the fire we fly And the devil will burn! - Scarlett Pimpernell - Bob Schroeck - 04-14-2010 The New York company just got back to me. Thanks but no thanks. Oh well. In other news, the local place I had a sorta-kinda first phone interview with last week (did I mention that here?) is holding a big open house tomorrow afternoon, and I'll be going. However, it seems like the response is so big they have to split it up into three slots each about two hours long. That means I'm likely to have a lot of competition for one of the six to a dozen openings they have... -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - ECSNorway - 04-14-2010 Good luck, both of you. They're painting the wall right behind me at work... the fumes are driving me up the wall. -- Sucrose Octanitrate. That's the HR person who offered to talk me up to all the other HR folks under the same corporate umbrella. I'm going to be checking out all those companies, if not tomorrow then Friday. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. Cool! - ordnance11 - 04-16-2010 I just checked the status of some of my applications to the Department of the Navy. It seems I passed the HR screening at the Department of the Navy in one of the Industrial Hygienst positions. The only question is..where? __________________ Into terror!, Into valour! Charge ahead! Location: Washington D.C. So at the end of this week: 1 -IH position @ Navy 2 - FCIP slots @EPA 3 - positions @ OSHA __________________ Into terror!, Into valour! Charge ahead! No! Never turn Yes, it's into the fire we fly And the devil will burn! - Scarlett Pimpernell Now up to 7 - ordnance11 - 04-21-2010 A 3rd position at the EPA (location Philly) passed HR screening. The kind HR specialist over at OSHA called me earlier about emailing my resume (for some reason it wasn't retrieved from USAJOBS) for an IH position at Queens, NY. So it's up to 7 (possibly more) applications that got bucked up to management. Of course, all of them are back on the east coast. __________________ Into terror!, Into valour! Charge ahead! No!
