Actually I was thinking That Look was circling the drain when he started using emotional blackmail on Anko to force the relationship with Naruto.
But anyhow, I think that he's telling the truth in that the idea that reader reviews stoke his ego is nothing but BS. One only needs to look at the review timestamps on A Mother's Love: Fire and Blood and compare to the last update's time stamp. Also, whether or not he chooses to update a certain fic is strictly his prerogative and his alone. It's not like anyone is paying him money - it is strictly fan work done for the hell of it. He has no obligation to finish a story, no matter how much we all whine and complain.

LOTLOF doesn't undersand his viewers, and doesn't care that he doesn't. He's made more than one comment that his personal favorite fic, The Hokage Great And Terrible, is one of his favorites, and he *never* understood why it did so poorly with his readers while A Few Angry Words was infinitely more popular.
I can sympathize with him in some ways. If my readers basically flamed me for doing some reader participation for fun, I'd be irritated too. I think he's being a bit silly, but that's his prerogative.

I can see that, though. Sometimes that understanding doesn't come unless you sit down and have a heart-to-heart with your readers. And when your base is that big, it's difficult at best to please the majority when there's a sea of critique to go through.
Heck, I'll be honest. Sometimes I have difficulty understanding some of the others on this very board when they critique my work... and sometimes they have trouble understanding me. Until we sit down and hash out what's wrong, then these misunderstandings do not get resolved. Witness the near-cluster-fuck that was my quest for a good villain! It eventually all got smoothed out, and I got an AU version of my story out of it, but there was quite a bit of confusion that (for me, anyways) almost came to vitriolic levels. My life at the time wasn't helping matters any, but you know how that is.
