I have considered it, and I'm no stranger to the concept -- my first job out of college was for a contractor on-base at Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering
Center -- but something about it now turns me off. Still, it's over three months and I shouldn't overlook any possibilities.

Same here...six months of looking at the private sector and I'm still looking.
You know..it's too bad I didn't take up the offer to rejoin the service last year. At least I wouldn't be unemployed.

It's too bad you aren't on this side of the border - we've got so many technically-trained civil servants retiring in the next 30 months that
we're starting to aggressively recruit from recent graduates and the private sector. I don't know whether the US civil service is in the same boat when
it comes to an aging workforce, but it can't hurt to take a look at what they've got open.
(Mind you, I'm biased; I and my grandfather are/were civil servants, and my father's seen both military and civil service. Quiet patriotism runs in the
blood.)

One hour until the interview. I hope this goes well; my research into the company indicates it's not only near enough to be fantastically convenient,
it's also about the ideal size as far as I'm concerned, and it's doing some neat stuff. Unfortunately, it looks like a lot of that neat stuff is
done in Java, which I can just muddle through when needed, and if they got the idea that I'm a Java programmer first and foremost, this may be a short
interview. Wish me luck, please.

Hey, Bob! Want something to serve as a coding exercise, that there's a vague-outside chance you can make a few coins from the result?
Pick up a copy of http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=SJG37-0313]this new SJGames release and code the rules in it as a stand-alone app, so that the GM in a hurry only needs to press a button (and maybe select a few categories) and get a result. You can do that in Java, right? Or, if you can't, learning how to do that will help improve your skills. And if you do a really good job at the coding, maybe SJGames will buy the app from you (one can hope - there's already call for such an app on the SJGames forums, and the supplement was just released today).
Just a thought (that assumes you've got a spare $9.99 kicking around)...

From the Java training I've had, I think it is possible but I can't really say without seeing what's in the book. The hard part is making it look
pretty, GUIs are tricky.
