RIP Edwin Newman - Bob Schroeck - 09-17-2010 http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1519575920100915]Journalist, author and grammarian Edwin Newman passed away in England last month, according to a CBS news announcement yesterday. He was 91. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - DHBirr - 09-18-2010 Damn. I read Strictly Speaking and A Civil Tongue during college, thirty-plus years ago. I may've already been a grammar Nazi, but Newman showed me it could be a noble -- albeit hopeless -- cause. One of my most vivid memories from those books is his citing the pretentiousness of California Governor Jerry Brown's statement about riding in a limousine to a ceremonial function (his swearing-in, if I remember right): "I cannot relate to that material-possessory consciousness." ----- Big Brother is watching you. And damn, you are so bloody BORING. |
