Lego! What Can't It Do? - Bob Schroeck - 12-18-2010

Well, it can make an Antikythera Mechanism, for one...

3d scanner, automatic seven-speed transmission (with reverse), factory, etc, etc, etc.

Go from the ground to orbit and back. Although there are some who think it could make some pretty neat mini-sats.

Well, if you had enough of them, I bet you could build a decent tower. Imagine, a Lego tower that reaches to the heavens themselves, proclaiming the greatness of mankind for all to see!

As of October, Lego has released the MakerLegoBot, which is built out of Legos and builds Lego constructions.
The Lego 3D Scanner, though, has been around since at least 2007, judging from the post date of this video.

I can't be the only one who thinks that the music for the Lego Antikythera Mechanism is epic and perfectly appropriate. It manages to evoke Ancient Mysteries, "Science Marches On"-style Progress, and Newton's Clock/God the Watchmaker, all at once. If only it had some kind of lyric, I'd love to see what Doug's magegift would make of it.

- Wiregeek - 12-20-2010

poop, I should have clarified - those are all things that Lego _has_ done.

No I think that someone's still to make a 7-speed auto gearbox from lego. The gearbox I've seen & everyone knows of is a 6(?) speed clutchless sequential box with reverse.

- Jorlem - 12-21-2010

The reverse doesn't count as a separate speed? It is negative, after all.

I was going to say "Lego can't feed me", but then I saw some stacking-brick candies in the candy store...

Well I remembered it wrong it's a 7 speed + R box

It's still a sequential manual though.

However this:

is apparently a full 3-speed automatic gearbox, in the prototype stage with no reverse gear.

Oh and here's a 3 cylinder lego air motor

Let's see them put together a Scanning-Tunneling Electron Microscope or fMRI machine out of Lego =D
