Shakin' Up the East Coast - Ebony - 08-23-2011

Evidently, Virginia just had a 5.9 earthquake. That had to be a bit unnerving.

Felt all the way up'n down the coast from NY to SC. I was wondering what that shaking was, and glad I wasn't closer.

I haven't heard of anyone killed by this yet (and hopefully we won't by the time all is said and done).

but I'm a bit worried about some of the damage to buildings in the area.

Here in CA we are used to that sort of thing, and tend to build on the assumption that buildings will get shaken around a bit.

I have no clue how some of the historic buildings in the area will take this, but I hope that nothing falls down.

Felt it here in Kensington, Md. Strongest quake I've felt since leaving Guatemala. House shook had some pictures fall or topple over. As well as some large waves in both house aquariums.

Surprisingly little damage so far; the total cost of the mass shutdown while they check to be sure it's safe to go back into buildings seems likely to be higher than the total cost of what damage there was.

I was on MD 210 (due south of DC, heading north) when the quake hit, and all I noticed was the car wavering back and forth a bit; I figured it was just an uneven road surface, and the shocks not absorbing it all because I was driving slower than usual.

Then I got in to work, and found out that A: there had been an earthquake, and B: they were closing the college down for the day and kicking everyone out. (Despite the fact that in the building where my office is, the sum total of the damage appears to have been that one light fixture broke and the ring around one ceiling sprinkler fell down.)

On the bright side, I get most of the day off, with pay.

On the downside, this means I'm not going to be able to get everything ready before classes begin, unless I come in on what would have been my day off.

C'est la vie...

A friend of mine found a pair of links (here and here), showing some of the horrible devastation that evidently has been left in the aftermath of the earthquake. I have to say that you guys are putting up a brave front in the face of all this tragedy.

I slept throught it. Which makes it the second east-coast earthquake I've missed that that way. Of course, even though I'm south of Boston it's still a mite north of NYC, so there may not have been much to notice anyway.

I was in the kitchen at work making tea. I didn't notice a thing, and came back to my desk to find three text messages, one missed call, and an email, all from Peggy demanding to know if I'd felt the earthquake. In the first few minutes afterward, at least, the thought in this area was that it was centered around Newark (NJ); Peggy had a particularly visceral experience of the quake and was worried that, being closer to the then-presumed epicenter I might have been in actual danger. I was sorry to have to disabuse her of the notion -- "Earthquake? What earthquake?" (Meanwhile, the coworker in the office behind me is going "Waaaaaah! Earthquake!" Seriously.)

And trust me, I know an earthquake when I feel one. There was a biggish one in North Jersey in, oh, late '86 or early '87. I don't remember the exact date, but I do remember that it woke me up early (after dawn, before my alarm). I groggily thought, "What the...? Oh, it's just an earthquake", then rolled over and went back to sleep. I was rather annoyed at myself later as it was my first earthquake, and I wanted to have somewhat more conscious memories of it.

We felt it pretty good here, and when I came home it was pretty terrible, my coffee-cup had fallen of the table. At least it wasn't damaged, I don't know what I would do without my trusty coffee-cup (probably sleep but I digress).

It did knock out phones for most of the day, some power outages, and some network issues.

Fun fact, the epicenter was near a nuclear power-plant which shutdown and went to emergency power, like fukashima (and as per design.)

Oh, and Ebony? I showed Peg the photos you've linked to. I haven't seen her giggling like that in a long time.

It'll be worth every penny spent if they find even one building that has been made unsafe due to fatigue from seismic activity.  Really, they just don't make buildings with earthquakes in mind over there.

- NifT - 08-24-2011

I'm about 50mi northwest of the epicenter, so we felt it pretty good here.  We were all a bit panicked; our building was designed with tornadoes in mind, not earthquakes, after all.  No damage thankfully, unless you count some filing cabinent drawers rolling open.

- ECSNorway - 08-24-2011

Didn't feel anything here, although some of the sub-sub-sub-urbs south of town felt it.

OTOH, my primary support client is HQ'ed in Richmond, and sent everyone home for the day from several facilities there.

- The Wanderer - 08-24-2011

Frankly, I've been wondering if there's something Going On.

Last Friday, there were severe thunderstorms in the region; at one point, looking at the radar, I noticed that there was a circle of unusually heavy rain centered on DC, lined up just about exactly with the ring of the Beltway. Those storms produced flooding at the college where I work, and I had to come in on Sunday to help repair damaged computer equipment.

On Sunday evening, there was more rain, and the same building flooded again. The building is still largely shut down, and schedules are disrupted.

Yesterday, there was the earthquake; the college closed down shortly after 14:00, despite the apparent lack of damage.

According to current forecasts, we are all but guaranteed to get at least the outside-boundary effects of a Category 2 hurricane this coming weekend.

At this point, I'm waiting to hear the announcement of sudden wildfires, or swarms of mutant wasps, or something equally outlandish. This is getting kind of weird...

Which is where those severe thunderstorms I mentioned hit, and not far from the epicenter of the earthquake, and within the possible trajectory of the hurricane.

- Jorlem - 08-25-2011

This weekend, I'm moving to MA for grad school. The apartment I'm going to be moving into is literally about 500 feet from the projected path of the hurricane's eye, last I checked. Wheeee...

hmmm, if possible you may want to leave a few things in boxes with family/friends.

Rather than have it be unpacked by nature.

(then again, I have no clue if this is considered a large hurricane. My knowledge of Earthquakes: cluefull, of hurricanes: clueless)

Just checked the website again, and the predicted path is now 60 miles west, so that's better for me, I think. Better than right on top of me, anyway. Here's the site I'm looking at: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/r....shtml?gm_track#contents
