It has been 8 since I had to buy a new vehicle and mine and that one was a '91. I bought a 2011 Kia Rio LX and I went to from Birmingham, Al. to Atlanta Ga. I was traversing hill country and going at an average speed of 80 mph. It came at to a gas mileage of 30.7 mpg. I'm impressed.

LX Means automatic - if you'd gone with row-your-own, you could be getting another 2-3 in the city - not so much better on the highway.
And the cool thing is, that's a relatively low-tech engine. Iron block, aluminum heads, DOHC valvetrain, variable timing.
Anyone who says internal combustion motors haven't changed in years just isn't paying attention.
