(Dell/Firefox) Oh, what the heck now?!? - BYapes - 03-14-2012 Okay, little problem here. I just got my computer back from the local repair shop (I spilled something on the keyboard...not fun), and now, when I try typing on the laptop's keyboard, it puts out random number/letter combinations, and the space bar either refuses to work, or sends me to the menu help.( I'm using a portable keyboard to type this out, so...) As for Firefox, whenever I scroll down, it starts flipping between regular and full screen views, and i can't find a way to disable it. FYI:The computer in question is a Dell XPS17 laptop Thanks for the help! Brian Yaple BYapes@aol.com Brian Y. Seed Chronicles - Sweno - 03-14-2012 my guess is they either: 1) didn't fix the problem fully, or 2) they keyboard is set to the wrong language do you get a one-to-one correlation between key presses and random numbers/letters? aka: if you press 's' on the keyboard does it always produce a the same wrong letter? if that is the case then you may need to change the keyboard layout (I can't remember how to do that off the top of my head). If it isn't the case, then you will probably want to take it back to the shop and tell them to finish their job. -Terry ----- "so listen up boy, or pornography starring your mother will be the second worst thing to happen to you today" TF2: Spy - Black Aeronaut - 03-14-2012 sweno Wrote:If it isn't the case, then you will probably want to take it back to the shop and tell them to finish their job.And maybe, yaknow, ask for your money back because there's absolutely no excuse for that kind of BS. It sounds like all the did was the cosmetic clean-up work - they didn't go inside the keyboard at all to get rid of all that sucrose that is likely still in there. (There might be a chance that it has to be replaced because sugars play merry hell on electronics.) - Star Ranger4 - 03-14-2012 BA has the right of it. I do have a separate, portable keyboard that I'm using now, so i can at least use it to type and such, so I' okay for now. As for the money issue, it's not really worth it, since the bill came up to about 20 or 23 dollars for cleaning. Thanks for all the replies and help! Brian Yaple BYapes@aol.com Brian Y. Seed Chronicles - Wiregeek - 03-14-2012 yeah, but that's 20 or 23 dollars that those fuckers didn't earn. "No can brain today. Want cheezeburger." The spacebar behavior makes it sound like an ALT is stuck. -- Sucrose Octanitrate. Proof positive that with sufficient motivation, you can make anything explode. - Berk - 03-17-2012 In my shop, when we get a laptop in with a jacked up keyboard we don't bother trying to 'fix' the keyboard, it rarely works. We just replace it. It's a more expensive option, but it's about ten times more effective. I don't trust any repair shop entirely that claims they can 'fix' a laptop keyboard that's had something spilled in it and has reached the point of typing jibberish. - Grumpy Uncle Gearhead - Wiregeek - 03-17-2012 Berk has the right of it on multiple levels. I have repaired both laptop and full sized keyboards that have suffered the indignity of gravity-introduced beverage consumption (I spilled a 16 oz glass of whiskey into an Inspiron 8100 custom, and I don't want to talk about it). You're looking at multiple _hours_ of labor to disassemble, additional multiples to reassemble, overnight for drying, about an hour for cleaning, and up to day(s) of labor if any actual repairs are needed to the membrane. And, being laptops, there is a very good chance that something will be broken during the dis assembly and reassembly tasks, since laptops are the earthly incarnation of Murphy. "No can brain today.
