Tech Help Requested - HoagieOfDoom - 03-16-2012 So I've had my iPhone 3GS for several years now with nary any problems despite repeatedly dropping and abusing it in various fashions. It's started acting up though, and I'm completely stumped, though it's possible that the fault is with my computer. iTunes refuses to recognize that it is there, but Windows (7) can clearly see it; it's listed right there in the devices. I tried reinstalling iTunes completely, even did a DFU restart while the phone was hooked up and no joy. (The DFU restart failed, actually. iTunes recognized it, downloaded the update and then said "nope, can't do this". Fortunately my phone automatically reverted itself so I can still use it.) The weird thing is that my roommate's copy of iTunes on his iMac can see my phone just fine, and my copy can find my regular-vanilla iPod. Both iTunes and my iPhone are up to date. Anyone got a clue? Because I sure as heck haven't got any. - Sweno - 03-16-2012 Is your computer a desktop or laptop? If you have a laptop, and can demonstrate the problem to the people at the genius bar, I've found them to be very helpful in ferreting out the root cause. Or failing that, to replace the device. Can it be seen on a different Windows machine not just your friend's Mac? If yes, I'd be looking at the local copy of iTunes on your machine being corrupted. - HoagieOfDoom - 03-16-2012 Nevermind, figured it out. From what I can tell the latest update to iTunes caused my computer to forget it had the Apple Mobile USB Driver, so I needed to manually repoint it in the right direction. Thanks for the help anyhow! - Rod.H - 03-16-2012 I can go one better, all my computers have just decided that my first-gen iPad doesn't exist. Yet I've got no problems with any of my other iDevices. Odd that it's happened on and around iPad 3 release day. I've got a Apple Genius Bar appointment later this evening, so I'll be able to get it tested on a non-mine system. It's somewhat annoying as I'm planning on doing a hand me down with it my big sister wants it for the playing of Scrabble. Edit: And the Genius Bar tech's called my old iPad dying DNR, I think might have a clue on the fix...it just means I need to get my hands on some tools ifixit sell mainly something like their spudger, so I can find the loose connections. At least it's not a iPad2/3 you need a heat gun to get them open. --Rod.H |
