My archery - Jinx999 - 10-12-2012
For the second week in a row I've utterly beaten my personal best in a Portsmouth round. I've been trying to beat 550 (out of a possible maximum of 600) for years.
Last week I shot 559, including 29 golds.
This week I shot 575, with 39 golds.
This included the end below.

I did archery while growing up, but I don't remember the term 'Portsmouth round'.
What does that involve regarding distance and/or equipment (I assume 4 shots)?

A Portsmouth round is an indoor one. 5 dozen arrows at a 60cm face at 20 yards range. The scoring is metric. It's the most common indoor shoot in Britain (or at least my area of it).
I shoot recurve.
It's actually more common to shoot 3 arrows at a time for this round. 4 arrows is a quirk of our club.

Gotta say, that's a great grouping. Better than I manage with pistols at that range, for certain.

Very impressive. I was an archer myself for many years -- recurve, on the archery team at Princeton in the 80s, later shooting semicompetitively in the SCA, but I've unfortunately let my bow gather dust for over a decade now -- and I know how hard that was.

That is a great shot, and great shooting. I hope to drag my bow out once the little guy is just a bit older and get back on regular range time.

Once you learn the trick with aiming, it starts to become easy, and then the fine-tuning begins.
After 20+ years of avoiding archery, when I was invited to a 'Birthday party / Range day' for one of my friend's kids. The Rangemaster taught me the trick. After that, he said I was 'scary-good'.

.... I've only used a bow once and at least got the arrows in the target, mostly in the blue & orange rings. Mind you it was at least the 50 foot mark for range. I've got more trouble with guns, the only time I've been target shooting I don't even think I hit the target plus the range controllers weren't concerned about teaching - just a quick run through how to load, fire & have at it 10 rounds, did you hit? next! - it probably doesn't help matters I'm left eye dominant and right handed.
Course now days with the weapon culture climate down here I'm probably lucky to just fire my nerf guns in peace. Although I probably wouldn't mind learning more on how to send lead & things down range and how to swing a sharp metal bar without injury to my self, it's just a problem of finding where I can do that stuff. I do have an idea were I could learn how to use a nagitana & possibly a line on archery.

Yep. Archery takes a while. There are whole piles of tricks to learn and practice until you can do them without thinking about them. Release has given me a lot of trouble. This was my best ever End, after three years of regular practice. And similar to Rod, I'm left handed and right eyed. (I shoot left handed because I'm very left handed and only moderately right eyed).
