Hurricane Sandy - Bob Schroeck - 10-29-2012 Peg and I are home, along with my mom, whom I picked up from her home much closer to the landfall point than we are. We are still very close, but Sandy is hitting the Jersey shore well south of us. Both of us are working from home, Peg on a day-by-day basis and me through tomorrow at least. We were away in West Virginia all weekend, in case anyone was worried about not seeing me in the forums for the last four days. So far we still have power, gas and lights, and we're at the top of a goodly hill that has been far more than sufficient to isolate us from earlier flooding events (we're at least 100 feet above the highest flood levels predicted for Sandy). We're well-stocked with emergency supplies, and have a small butane burner to cook with if we lose the gas, thanks to Kat and Joe and Scott. And almost every tree that could fall on our house already has in previous storms. Anyway, we're hunkered down for the next 36+ hours, and expect to come out okay no matter what. We're hoping everyone else in the path of the storm is safe and well and continues to stay that way. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - DHBirr - 10-29-2012 Got my fingers crossed for all of you. ----- Big Brother is watching you. And damn, you are so bloody BORING. - robkelk - 10-30-2012 The folks on the radio just mentioned that the wind turbines in Ontario are already running at 94% of capacity thanks to the early winds we're getting from Sandy. (That's enough power to supply all of Ottawa, plus all of Oshawa.) So it isn't all bad... Mind you, Sandy has already claimed dozens of lives. Here's hoping everybody else comes through this unscathed.. -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. Wind-gusts are pretty strong. Nasty aspect is that being on top floor and windward side of townhouse means you get the brunt of the rain as well. Already have had to set up a zip lock bag as a bucket on window to catch water leaking in through frame. My younger brother who is in Deale in Anne Arundel County just lost power. Sounds like you'll be caulking the window exteriors this weekend... or maybe next weekend. -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. (Am on cellphone.) Winds are still outrageous. Sky is dimly lit, don't know by what, punctuated by silver-blue-red flashes I think are burning transformers. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - Jorlem - 10-30-2012 Oy. I hope everything is ok down there, or at least that normalcy is restored soon. Things are a bit calmer in northern Massachusetts, or at least I haven't noticed things getting that bad. Best of luck. ----- Stand between the Silver Crystal and the Golden Sea. My friends (10 minute drive away) have lost power already. Here's hoping that I don't lose power as well. Stay safe! - Irascor - 10-30-2012 Bob, you and your wife (and your mother) have my prayers on your continued safety. - s3yang - 10-30-2012 Bob Schroeck Wrote:Update: we lost power 30 minutes ago. (That said, my first reaction to 'burning transformers' was 'is Bob making a giant robot joke that I'm not quite getting?'.) - ECSNorway - 10-30-2012 Lost power here too, just as I was leaving for work this morning. Seems to be isolated in area -- first stoplight that I came to on the way in was out, the second was still working. Hopefully all will be back up by the time I get home. -- Sucrose Octanitrate. Stay safe Bob. - Dartz - 10-30-2012 Took a while to actually trip and extinguish the arc. But that's not an explosion, just a bigarse electric arc. That's doing more or less what it's supposed to do in the event of a failure. If that's at a power station, that's a lot of energy going through that, vapourising and melting the metal conductors. (Busbar or transformer possibly). ________________________________ --m(^0^)m-- Wot, no sig? - Foxboy - 10-30-2012 Yuppers, up here in the boonies of N'hampshuh all we really got was a lot of wind. We are well-equipped for the emergency, and save for being a little chilly are all right. Our electric company has no idea yet when our neighborhood will get power back. I'm listening to the local radio stationing it right now. However, the amount of cranking needed to charge my phone is arm-breaking. We still have no power, and it's past the "gone bad" period for most of the stuff in our fridge. We still have 12 hours on the freezer, and there's some hints we may get power back before then. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - Irascor - 10-31-2012 That sucks, Bob. I hope things get better soon. We can haz power! - Bob Schroeck - 10-31-2012 ...and light, and heat. Electricity came back about 55 minutes ago. Which means as soon as I finish my lunch, I have to go back to work.
