What the hell, Hero (Games) - classicdrogn - 01-31-2016

Am I reading the product list right, and Hero System Vehicles (6th Ed) still does not exist, despite having references made to it in the core books that came out in 2009?

That...

That...

(incoherent sounds of rage)

If it's any consolation, GURPS 4th edition came out in 2004, and it doesn't have a vehicles book yet either. (Mind you, they didn't promise a vehicles book in the core book. I think.)

Thee is that, I suppose, but GURPS 4 was more a matter of defragmenting the rules and polishing a few knobs and whistles, where Hero 6 eliminated a stat, changed how several others were determined, changed the way they measure distance for crying out loud, and generally overhauled things to the point that converting a character across editions is essentially a matter of doing a full rebuild, with the expectation of about a 30-50% increase in total cost. Old copies of the 5th edition Ultimate Vehicle are still floating around and they still sell the PDF, but ... arrrgh.

Ah well, it's not like I have time to play anything anyway (or I'd be crawling back to Drag0nFlight's group to see if they've thrown out all my records and dustcatchers yet) but it's still annoying that the most comprehensive vehicle rules for 6e is the "here's how to buy the basics, just give it special abilities like any other character" summary, that's jammed together with base construction in a single chapter of the second volume of the core book. Champions Complete has a size/cost chart that covers things up to about twice as big, but the total length (still including base construction) is knocked down to three pages there. Considering how much of Hero System is figuring out the best mechanics to fit your desired special effect, it could really use more explanation and examples.

Palladium has had a similar problem with some books.
For example, they came out with their Fantasy setting book 'Land of the Damned 1: Chaos Lands' in 2001.Land of the Damned 2: Eternal Torment was released in 2002.
Land of the Damned 3: The Bleakness?  it's been "coming soon" for over a decade.

And let us not talk about Anima and Fantasy Flight Games, which can easily be added to this.

Hell - I'm still sticking with Hero 5th edition myself, and if I ever play a game again, I'll use the 6th ed books for flavor and background and nothing else.
5th Edition Hero System, you see - HAS a vehicles book. In fact it has EVERYTHING. You might have to do some hunting around for it. But it's all out there in workable, even downloadable form if you like.

I think they really messed up when they gave up the rights to the IP to Cryptic. Worst decision they could have made. It may have made sense in the short run. But in the long run, I think it's going to kill Hero Games deader than GDW.
