Not Hip, just Tragic - robkelk - 05-24-2016 Gord Downie, the frontman of The Tragically Hip, has incurable brain cancer. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/g ... -1.3597361 The group is planning one last tour. If they come to a venue anywhere near you, I'd recommend going. -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. Adversaries remain citizens of the same state, common subjects of the same sovereign, servants of the same law." - Michael Ignatieff, addressing Stanford University in 2012 - Ebony - 05-24-2016 Damn. As a fan of the band, I am a bit bummed. Ebony the Black Dragon http://ebony14.livejournal.com "Good night, and may the Good Lord take a Viking to you." - robkelk - 05-25-2016 Tour schedule - all are Canadian cities:

Adversaries remain citizens of the same state, common subjects of the same sovereign, servants of the same law." - Michael Ignatieff, addressing Stanford University in 2012 - robkelk - 06-17-2016 The final concert will be aired and streamed live. See http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/tragically- ... -1.3639948 for details. Oh, and new Tragically Hip album. -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. This was definitely a big deal. Three sets, the usual two encores... and a third encore, which The Hip never do. Prime Minister Trudeau was in the audience, not in a booth but actually on the floor with everyone else. CBC broadcast the concert live without commercials, preempting Olympic Games coverage to do so. (Although I noticed that the radio feed was live but the TV feed was on a three-second delay - they mush have known Tired as Fuck was on the playlist and had somebody ready to mute that one repeated word. Good thing I listened to the radio feed.) One thing that should be mentioned: we've all assumed that this was their farewell tour, but the band never actually said that. So there's hope for more... assuming Gord Downie's health holds up. -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. RIP Gord Downie RE: Not Hip, just Tragic - robkelk - 10-18-2017 Statement from the Tragically Hip Statement from Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler Statement from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau EDIT: Small photo gallery Gord Downie's website - he managed to survive to see the release of his latest - and now last - album RE: Not Hip, just Tragic - robkelk - 10-18-2017 Regular programming on CBC Radio has been preempted for two hours, for a memorial to Gord Downie. RE: Not Hip, just Tragic - robkelk - 10-18-2017 A collection of tweets and Instragram posts in memoriam (And I've been trying to figure out who to compare Gord Downie to, for people who don't live in Canada. The closest I can come is Bruce Springsteen, but Gord's cultural impact in Canada was much larger than Springsteen's in the USA.) |
