Human magnetoreception - RMH999 - 03-18-2019 Cool scientific paper showing that humans can detect magnetic fields (if only unconsciously). http://www.eneuro.org/content/early/2019/03/18/ENEURO.0483-18.2019 They set up the test subjects in a Faraday cage and measured detection of the magnetic fields by EEG - even if the person couldn't tell anything was going on, the EEG changed when exposed to the magnetic fields, but only in certain rotations/presentations. For example, when the field was aligned in a way that is naturally present in the Northern Hemisphere, the subjects (Northern Hemisphere residents) showed the EEG changes. If the EM field was presented in a Southern Hemisphere alignment, they didn't have the EEG change. RMH RE: Human magnetoreception - hazard - 03-18-2019 Obvious control test: Do the same test with southern hemisphere residents. It'll be interesting if things change, or not. Both give different clues to how human magnetoreception works. RE: Human magnetoreception - classicdrogn - 03-18-2019 Heh. My father always blames the way he poops out after dark on "electromagnetic rays from the sun." Which, technically, is true even as a simple response to the change in lighting, but still. |
