I'm an engineer in-training. For us, plain language isn't usually an option. Even when trying to dumb things down for other people. Because sometimes that dumb person is the guy to whom you need to justify an expensive and critically needed part/tool, and you can only dumb things down to an extent before you have to start explaining other things. Why? That's the word right there. Just like Mindy in the Animaniacs, they're always gonna keep asking "Why?" until you get tired or they're finally satisfied. Why? Because even if you say "Without this it goes boom" they're gonna want to know why it goes boom. Why? Because they want to know if there's a way to do things cheaper. Why? Because if he can make this cheaper, he gets more money, and everyone likes having more money. |
