if you can't pay - you don't breath. - Dartz - 11-17-2024 Imagine if you will, a Martian Colony. Elno station. Founded and funded as a tech-billionaire's offworld paradise, for tech-billionaires and those hardcore enough to be willing to work there, as hard as it takes to make it work. Imagine a walled garden with walls 85 million kilometres tall. Imagine oxygen, water - the basic necessities of life, being a subscription service. Pay as you Breath. Imagine what happens when our Benevolant Dictator for Life is appalled at how much water all the plants waste. Water is expensive and sooo Heavy So he rips the plants out of the O2 generator and airlocks them. Imagine landing on the damned wreckage of Elno's dreams, It'd be like lord of the electric flies. Rapture for techbros. A world of air piracy, where the necessary infrastructure to keep the station afloat is crapping itself out because the one person who could maintain it - couldn't hold their breath. Where Moving the Needle, expanding the habs and making New Shit is more valuable than keeping the water flowing and keeping the air inside the old. Water, meat and biomass are expensive. While the only thing that's cheap, is human life. Because if you can't pay - you don't breath. ----- It'd make a hell of an Novel/RPG/Game/Bioshock sequel..... Wasn't there a NuWho/Capaldi episode with that idea, and the only things left were automated spacesuits whose occupants were unable to pay for their air? RE: if you can't pay - you don't breath. - Labster - 11-22-2024 I'm not sure about that 'cause Capaldi's Doctor was so overacted I couldn't take bear watching it. But here's this from 1952, Carl Barks' The Golden Helmet, where Donald imagines himself as King of North America, and the only tax on people would be for the air they breathe: |
