[RFC/Final Draft] Regina and Jessica - Black Aeronaut - 09-14-2008 I've been a busy boy lately and I've got a final draft of Gina and Jess's character bios. Please comment, kibitz, whatever, before I post them on the Wiki. Edited to fix a couple small things. And again to get rid of the god damn smilies. Regina 'Gina' Langley History Gina is an unusual case, even as androids among the Fen go. She originally awakened as an AI, and even that awakening was non-standard. Originally, when Benjamin had handwaviumized the computer that she had awakened in, he had the desired result that the computer was merely enhanced beyond the bleeding-edge standards of modern computers. It was only with some extensive work on character studies for Asuka Langley-Soryu of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the later installation into his car that the AI that came to be known as 'Gina' awakened. With the recent information of Asuka fresh in the RAM modules, the handwavium selected her as a template to build from. Of course, once this 'Asuka Clone' discovered what became of the character she was based on, she immediately desired to distance herself as far from Hideaki Anno's mind-dump that was Neon Genesis Evangelion. Benjamin did his best to be a good friend to Gina and while she was antagonistic at times (and still is to this day) she received his personality quite well. However, Benjamin's detractors, most of them belonging to factions that believe AI's should be free to come and go as they please, say that it is merely a psychological quirk much like Stockholm Syndrome that ties Gina to Benjamin. Both have told such detractors that they're just jealous and to kindly knock-off. Originally, an android body for Gina had not been planned - instead she was supposed to be inserted as the AI for the first Blackbird-Class ship, the SS Magnificent Midnight. When the Midnight's AI suddenly manifested before the computer system was even completed, though, it left Gina without a place in the emergent-faction what would become The Roughriders. This was resolved by implanting Gina permanently into an AC Peters-type android body. Since then, Gina has stepped in as Benjamin's right hand woman and the Executive Officer in over-all command of the Roughriders (with Benjamin, of course, being the over-all Commanding Officer). Also, since Gina has taken on a human form, she tends to stay by Benjamin's side, especially at Conventions. When asked about this, Benjamin and Gina say that it's merely to drive off the Femme-fens attracted by his remarkably virulent case of Tenchi Masaki Syndrome, though some suspect that the two have a much closer relationship budding. Neither of the two has said nor done anything to confirm or deny such claims. Jessica 'Jess' Ayanami History Jessica, unlike many Fen, came from a wealthy and affluent family. However, despite loving her family dearly, she despised the lifestyle and shunned it. Fortunately, she's also pretty stable, so she didn't turn out too bad once she discovered anime. Though she loved cosplay. She doesn't take it to the disturbing levels that some Fen do, and focuses primarily on making quality costumes that she sells for her own profit. In this way, she made her own way in the world, only needing a relatively small loan from her family to get started. One character she was very fond of cosplaying, however, was Rei Ayanami of Neon Genesis Evangelion and she has been known to keep a small collection of Rei costumes. Eventually, like all Fen, she found out about handwavium and immediately made arrangements to procure some to modify her car, a simple 2-door Dodge Neon, into her own space-car. It was not long until she opened up her costume shop in Kandor. Fascinated by handwavium, she began to study how it works in an effort to produce her own unique strain. Her goal was to create a strain that could create a small army of bio-androids with very little fooling around and only a basic template to go by. This way someone could easily staff a large installation with very little investment on their part. Looking back on what happened to her, though, she feels it was probably a mistake for her to do all her research and development inside her own costume shop. Once she had what she felt was a viable strain of quick-clone handwavium, she started on her latest project: a genuine Evangelion Plugsuit for cosplaying Rei Ayanami for the Annual Kandor City Cosplay Competition. Unfortunately, she had worked so long and hard on the wave-enhanced costume that she got into a last-minute rush. Murphy's Law states that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. So it was that she slipped on a left-over scrap of costume material right next to the vat of her experimental strain of handwavium. The nature of this strain was that it held all the necessary chemical building blocks to create one-hundred replicas of whatever was used for a template. With no one around to rescue Jess, she remained in the quick-clone strain until it had exhausted its supplies and evaporated away. When she came to, she suddenly found that she had one-hundred-one sets of everything! For a few very disorienting weeks, she had to learn how to cope with having more of her to work with. Whenever she lifted a finger, every one of her copies would do the same thing until she learned how to thread her consciousness into a sort of collective hive-mind. Fortunately for her, she had the help of friends and professionals. She bounced back remarkably well, kicking her own business into overdrive with the sudden surplus of manpower. However, that still didn't pay the bills enough to feed all her stomachs, so she began to contract out her services as one of Fenspace's first temporary labor services. However, she felt that she found her true calling when she met Benjamin and Gina while they were recruiting personnel to staff their new asteroid base. The rest, as they say, is history. - robkelk - 09-14-2008 A comment and a nitpick... Quote:This was resolved by implanting Gina permanently into a Scott-type android body.Ah, so she wears glasses. (The thought of an Asuka-lookalike meganekko does have a certain appeal; her facial structure appears to be the type that would be complemented by them, although she doesn't need them.) The ACPeters-series bodies don't have that physiological quirk. Quote:36-AtalanteNo dash between the number and the name. Other than that, these look good to me... assuming you're happy with them. -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. Adversaries remain citizens of the same state, common subjects of the same sovereign, servants of the same law." - Michael Ignatieff, addressing Stanford University in 2012 - Cobalt Greywalker - 09-14-2008 Quote:This was resolved by implanting Gina permanently into a Scott-type android body. Since then, Gina has stepped in as Benjamin's right hand woman and the Executive Officer in over-all command of the Roughriders (with Benjamin, of course, being the over-all Commanding Officer). And... Quote:I am one with the net: When she was made, she had A10 clips that are permanently mounted to her skull. These act as transceivers for her high-bandwidth ether-wave connection to whatever ether-wave networks are available. These clips have their liabilities, though, as they are directly connected to her nervous system. Two problems with this: a) The Scott Series androids all have bad sight as a series quirk. I doubt Gina wants to Awaken and find she needs glasses. Yes it could be fixed, but I doubt Gina would be happy. b) The mounted A10 clips are not something Sora or Kohran probably have experience with (depending on when Actuallised into the material world, it would either be them for a Scott-series or A.C. But if you were buying from A.C. you'd probably be getting a different series anyway.), so they'd be more quirky than you've said. - robkelk - 09-14-2008 Quote:The mounted A10 clips are not something Sora or Kohran probably have experience withNot as such, but they do have a different form of mechanical telepathy. In GURPS terms, it's a combination of Mind-Reading (Cybernetic, Touch-Based (requires cable connection)), Racial Memory (digital, trigger: physical connection to data depository, backed-up memories only), and Telesend (Cybernetic, Touch-Based (requires cable connection)). This was originally intended as a means of backing up their memories and personalities in case of catastrophic accident; Yayoi (of all people) quickly figured out that there was no actual need for the intervening server, and no limitation on whose memories each of the "angels" could read. (Sora will figure out with a bit of prompting in chapter 3 of LoGG that they can also control electronic devices that are connected to them.) The only thing different about the A10 clips is the lack of Racial Memory (no backups in a data depository somewhere), the removal of the Cybernetic and Touch-Based limitations (no need for a physical cable connection), and an Accessibility limitation: "only to or from other Jessicas wearing A10 clips". -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. Adversaries remain citizens of the same state, common subjects of the same sovereign, servants of the same law." - Michael Ignatieff, addressing Stanford University in 2012 - Foxboy - 09-14-2008 Also, for Gina, since there's a pre-existing AI: Vulpine Fury could have done the body easily. Upside: nearly flawless biomimetics. Downside, the snarling fox head "tattoo" somewhere embarassing. Quote:It was a rare day at Vulpine Fury's Puppet Works; the man himself was in the storefront crating one of his display pieces for its new owner. He'd miss having the Motoko Kusanagi telepresence in his shop, but he'd gotten a lot of monetary recompense to upgrade her and sell her to a "new concern." Just as he was about to close the crate up, the door chimed a Mariachi version of "The Muppet Show Theme."''We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.'' -- James Nicoll - Black Aeronaut - 09-14-2008 Quote: robkelk wrote:Ah, gotcha. Looking into that now. Trying to decide between an AC Peters or a Vulpine Fury. Quote: robkelk wrote:Roger that! ![]() RE: A10 Clips Jess and Gina have differentially purposed A10's. For Gina, they are high-bandwidth ether-wave connections, capable of allowing her to fully telepresence herself elsewhere if needs be. I would imagine that if she wanted to, she could back herself up to a repository somewhere. However, it'll be a while until that happens because doing so reminds her of what Rei was forced to do in NGE. For Jess, they are strictly a form of telepathy that maintains her Collective Consciousness. They do not connect her directly to any sort of wireless network. For this task, she'll usualy devote a couple of herselves to perform her tasks on the Internet at a couple of desktop terminals. They do, however, provide a sort of back-up system. Face it - she's a Collective Consciousness. If one of her bodies dies, it will merely hurt like a sunuvabitch (if at all), she'll curse up a blue streak, then see about replacing the lost body later on. Also, they only work for Jess and Jess alone. No other individuals with any sort of telepathy, mechanical or natural, or even other A10 clips can tap into her 'network.' It is likely the most secure short-range com system in all of Fenspace. Quote: Foxboy wrote:Hmmm... Interesting. Though it would be nice to meet AC as well. I just checked out the character bio for AC... And man oh man oh man there is SO much room there for a minor disaster. Benjamin has his Tenchi Masaki Syndrome, and while AC may be able to resist, I doubt that will happen if she happens to go into one of her heats. Once -that- mess gets cleaned up, I don't know if Gina will want an AC Peters series body. ^_^;; - robkelk - 09-14-2008 Quote:For Jess, ... It is likely the most secure short-range com system in all of Fenspace.Oh, now there's something for The Fall of Boskone Prime, the final story in the "Fenspace for Great Justice!" arc.... Nearly a hundred of the most battleworthy ships from Operation Great Justice and the Space Patrol fly by a belter's asteroid. As they fly past, making a perfectly-coordinated maneuver to avoid the asteroid, the ether is eeriely silent... There's a quick series of cuts to a half-dozen of the ships' bridges showing that each has a Jess aboard, either directly at the helm or advising the ship's pilot or AI. Finally, we see one more Jess, and the camera pans back to reveal she and four more of her clones are busy updating a holodisplay at the end of a briefing table. Down one side of that table are seated Benjamin Rhodes, Haruhi Suzumiya, Catty Nebulart, Wire Geek, Alliance General Judi Knight, and Councilor for Cooperation Black; down the other are KJ, Kirk Russell, Noah Scott, Katz Schrödinger, Starfleet Admiral Somak, and Eternal Senshi Hayakawa. Blackstone, Bob Schroeck, Mr. Morden, and Jon Helscher watch from just inside the doorway and despair as Fenspace's "movers and shakers" continue their petty arguments, even at this late hour... The story continues from there, of course. -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. Adversaries remain citizens of the same state, common subjects of the same sovereign, servants of the same law." - Michael Ignatieff, addressing Stanford University in 2012 - Black Aeronaut - 09-15-2008 *Stamps APPROVED in bold red ink* ^_^ Benjamin would be one of the guys trying to get them all on the same page so the mission doesn't devolve into chaos (as though that'll happen with Jess on the job). Meanwhile, Gina is probably taking field-command of The Roughriders from the Midnight with a Jess at the helm. The Special Stealth Squad (consisting of three Talon class fighters and an EDI class) is at Gina's direct command - it is in fact Gina's personal squad and she usually uses telepresence to pilot her EDI - a risk since her connection is nowhere nearly as secure as Jess's, but it provides excellent protection for her since she's most likely safer on the Midnight. The top three pilots among the Roughriders (Ben, Gina and Jess excluded) are piloting the Talons. Of course, the other five Blackbird Class ships are there as well, along with their own F-EZig compliments, laying waste to Boskonians left and right, paving the way for the Peacemakers and tenderizing the Boskonian defenses with their VLS missile vollies. Meanwhile, The Roughriders' four Peacemaker Class Carrier/Bombers are out in full force complete with their F-EZig escorts. They have eschewed the crew-quarters modules for space for munitions. Today's special: Gravity Bombs. Waved with Mil-Grade Handwavium, they do some extremely nasty things to planetoids. Anything that the waves of Blackbirds and F-Ezigs have not caught is mowed down by the Peacemakers' point defense systems that consist of eight 20mm Vulcan gattling guns. I'd love to say that we even have a pair of Firefox Class super-interceptors, but as I said before I'm going to save those for post-OGJ where they'll probably do more good. - Cobalt Greywalker - 09-15-2008 Quote:Hmmm... Once -that- mess gets cleaned up, I don't know if Gina will want an AC Peters series body. ^_^;; A.C. is still male enough to resist Ben's Tenchi Masaki Syndrome (especially because she'd do a background check and probably know it exists), and she has enough stubborn willpower to resist 'Heating Up' (something Kasumi calls her on with reasonable frequency). However, it depends on when the request is made. If it's before April 13 2013, the you might have to worry about the Darkeyes side of her personality. If it's after then you're a bit safer, although the two of them may be a little confused about all the flirting she's doing to both of them in any case. ![]() (Oh, and don't have Ben call her Washu. That'll make the gloves come off.) - Black Aeronaut - 09-15-2008 I'll have to double check on the date. This is going to occur six-to-twelve months after the SOS-Con - sometime between when they take delivery of their Blackbird and when they've discovered that they won't be able to implant Gina as the Midnight's AI. And if all he has to worry about is flirting, that'll be when Gina steps in. What she'll do, I'm not sure, but I know that she's smart enough to figure something out. And I have no idea why Benjamin would call her Washu. If she did anything to remind him about the crazy little scientist, he'll keep his yap shut unless it was something really... big. At that point, he wouldn't call her Washu outright, but instead he'll say something like, "The hell? Did your biomod happen to take some cues from that mad scientist in Tenchi Muyo?" It'll still get a reaction out of her, I'm sure, but it's a more fun and roundabout way of doing it. ![]() - Cobalt Greywalker - 09-15-2008 If Gina's willing to do virtual, the two of them wouldn't need to visit Prometheus Forge until the body's ready. And the Washu thing? Me making the connection between TM Syndrom, s slightly shapeshifting semi-mad scientist, and the odd tools that are around the Forge. And possible teasing about 'samples'. ![]() - robkelk - 09-15-2008 Quote: And possible teasing about 'samples'.Which means the gloves coming off would be a good thing, right? If AC was putting the gloves on and mentioning "samples", then Benjamin would have to worry... 8) -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. Adversaries remain citizens of the same state, common subjects of the same sovereign, servants of the same law." - Michael Ignatieff, addressing Stanford University in 2012 - Black Aeronaut - 09-16-2008 *Snort!* Really, I honestly don't know what would worry him more: gloves coming off at the mentioning of samples, or gloves going on. I think I'll go with an AC Peter's type body for Gina... Or rather Gina will. She'll have her own motivations for that which I'll hint at in a story later on. But the Vulpine Fury won't be left out - a sizeable staff is still going to be needed to supplement Jess's army-of-one-mind. I was thinking that in places like the engineering plants and the hangars, Clanks made by The Sparks would be used. But for the more mundane housekeeping duties, something that the Vulpine Fury can make should work wonderfully because 1) the human-form androids would be less jarring to the personnel and visitors (bonus points if they're pleasant to look at - no massive tracts of land, though), and 2) they only need to be basic robotic AIs that can follow a list of chores - no awakening needed. So, hows that? - ECSNorway - 09-16-2008 Hmm. And now we need to have a story where Jess visits Greenwood.... Yeah, ok, I'm a Rei fan. -- Sucrose Octanitrate. Grover's Corners is going to be a given because there's going to be a need for fresh food and veggies to supplement the supply they get from their own gardens. They prefer not to purchase any food from Earth-side because it can usually be found fresher in Fenspace - less red tape, too. The Pegasus is going to be an ideal ship for these food runs because of the massive cargo capacity and the kids will have a chance to play while they're getting loaded up. The only thing I can think of would be business with the Rockhounds, and there probably won't be a whole lot after Jess joins up. Though I could imagine that findings by the Pegasus crew will be of interest to TSAB (i.e.: recovered Boskonian technology) so I suppose Jess would go there in the Pegasus and its crew to show them what was found. Sound good to you? - ECSNorway - 09-17-2008 There's always the curiosity factor. "Hey, there's another Rei Collective out there, let's check her out." The TSAB angle could work, too; Rockhounds does a good bit of 'contracting' for them. And if things go as scandalicious post-OGJ as they seem to be for the poor lunks, they're going to be looking for civilian jobs... and Marsden is going to be expanding.... -- Sucrose Octanitrate.
