Anyone else have a "Just for you!" link at the top of the page? - robkelk - 02-18-2010

I don't know whether this is something just Yuku supporters get, or whether everyone has it, but there's a link at the top of the page that wasn't there yesterday. The text is "Just for you!", and the URL is [my forum handle].u.yuku.com/convert/me

Anybody know what this is?

Now that you mention it, yes, I have one now. Brand new, as far as I can tell. Hm. Let's see where it goes...

Okay, that looks... disturbing:
Quote:Convert Profile Data

You are about to upgrade your profile. All of your data will be converted except for your skin customizations. Your photos may take up to 48 hours to convert, and you won't be able to revert back to your old profile once you convert. You won't be able to interact with anyone who hasn't upgraded, but you can invite all of your friends to upgrade for free. Confirm upgrade?
Well, that doesn't sound good.

If this is some kind of upgrade of service, I haven't heard about it yet. I'm going to have to look into this. In the mean time, I recommend that nobody who gets that link click on it or if they do, don't for any reason click the "confirm" button.

Okay, back with the info.

Apparently Yuku is heading to a major revision release sometime soon, and among the things it's doing is apparently turning your profile page into a clone (kind of) of FaceBook (judging by the features they're adding). At the moment it's in beta, and supporters are invited to try it out -- hence some of us getting buttons and some of us not. Those of us who get an invite can invite others to convert as well because the warning about interaction is serious -- but the scope on which it applies is not clear; I can't tell if it means private mail or entire boards.

Personally, I don't feel like doing their beta for them. Apparently conversion will be mandatory when the new stuff goes into release, but until then I don't want to have to deal with the "who's upgrade/who's not" issue, especially if it impacts who can post to the board and who can't.

In any case, the support boards have been acting as though there's been a lot of advance warning about this. For all I know there has, but I can't really find much of anything before January. In any case, here are some possibly useful links to threads in the support forum:

Oh, bog. If I wanted a Facebook page, I'd have joined Facebook...

Likewise, unless they plan to pay me to work for them.

Sounds like this is being extended to free members, or at least some free members. As something that looks like a gift box in the navigation bar? I don't have one anyway.

Presumably any reasons to beware still apply.

They're at it again.

I've got a link up yonder. Beware.

Same here! Looks like they're releasing the Beta to the general public.

Likewise. It's not going to go away until they formally roll out this change, or they roll it back under protests by the userbase.

And I'm necro'ing this thread because I just noticed that some time recently, said link appears to have been removed. At least, I don't see it any more. I wonder if the change in ownership ended up scrapping this "upgrade".

Is it still appearing on anyone else's pages?

It looks like it's gone for me too. I had totally tuned it out, and never noticed.

And now I think we were premature. The link went away because the stuff's been activated for everyone. The "More" option that now appears under the avatars opens up a submenu which seems to include all what appear to be social networking features.

It would appear, btw, that if we ignore it nothing changes -- the forum still works as it always has. It just has more things we can do with it, if we really want.
