A teaser from the Harry Potter Step - Bob Schroeck - 10-26-2006 I feel like posting something teaserish, if only to delude myself that I'm not blocked on DW5 chapter 3. So here's a little passage where Doug almost gives Hermione an aneurysm. "What are those?" Hermione asked. "Pinpoint nukes." "Nukes?" She swirled to face me. "NUCLEAR WEAPONS?" she all but screamed. I held up my hand, the thumb and forefinger the barest visible distance apart. "Liiiiittle teensy ones." "Are you crazy?" "It's part of the persona, yeah. But to answer your *implied* question, it's the perfect weapon here. The total destruction radius and radiation output are so small that only the Death Eaters will be affected. Even if we lose, their survivors will still get radiation sickness and die. And since Wizarding medicine knows nothing about how to treat radiation poisoning -- I asked Madame Pomfrey," I added parenthetically to cut off her demand of *how* I knew that, "it both decimates Riddle's forces *and* gives the impression of an unstoppable curse on his followers." "But..." she sputtered. "The point here, Hermione, is to *win*. American general George Patton once said, 'The object of war is not to die for your country, but to make the other bastard die for his.' That's what I'm doing. They wouldn't hesitate to kill us, so I'm not hesitating to kill *them*. And I'm using a method that will *keep* killing them in an horrific and morale-destroying manner for a long time afterward even if we lose this battle. That's a big win no matter how I tally up the score." -- Bob --------- ...The President is on the line As ninety-nine crab rangoons go by... Quote: Re: A teaser from the Harry Potter Step - Kokuten - 10-28-2006 I love me some Belisarius! I can totally see this. Doug kicks it up a notch, takes it to an honest to god WAR footing, and Hermione just can't cope.Wire Geek - Burning the weak and trampling the dead since 1979 Re: A teaser from the Harry Potter Step - Black Aeronaut - 10-28-2006 Quote:She'll learn how to eventually. Re: A teaser from the Harry Potter Step - Bluemage - 10-29-2006 That's the classic application of one of the Major Laws of Magic (Chester's Corollary to Law #1, to be precise). Simply put, Law #1 of Magic is that magic need not make sense. The corollary is: The magical ability accessible for use by any one magic-user is inversely proportional to his/her degree of sanity. Doug makes too much *sense* to be a good mage. Even when he's crazy.Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines... Re: A teaser from the Harry Potter Step - offsides - 03-21-2007 Hey Bob, what about that little bit you were sending around recently that you decided was going to end up on the cutting room floor? You gonna post it up for everyone to see? I don't think it has any spoilers. If so, then yeah, I can understand why he cut it. Still a shame though. It doesn't really gel well with the rest of his final chapter in tone (little too dark for Harry, even if he is RIGHT to be so), but DAMN what a confrontation that would have been!-Logan ----------------- The only good Marvel is CAPTAIN MARVEL!
