That's a very good question. That's something I never thought of in all the years I've played or written him.
Hmm.
I'd say that backfires can't be redirected like that -- it would reduce the "punishment" value of a backfire. Since it's not a purely mechanical process, but overseen by his subsconscious mind, a backfire should always trump a metasong, because that part of his mind wants it to.
