A Song of Valdemar - Proginoskes - 06-18-2012 At least, I think it's from that plane: some authors work in multiple settings, and Mercedes Lackey might be one of them.Anyway, what do you think Doug's magegift would make of Kerowyn's Ride? (Lyrics by Misty Lackey, Kethry's lines sung by Leslie Fish, and Kerowyn's lines sung by Heather Alexander.) Quote:Kerowyn, Kerowyn, where are you going? At a random guess, this song turns Doug into a woman and gives him a simulacrum of Need (if I recall correctly, Need "guides the hands" of her wielder to help make up for lack of skill, and renders her immune to magic. A simulacrum wouldn't be as powerful a magic shield, but would still refuse to work in the hands of a man). EDIT: Eehh, probably not. It might create a simulacrum of Need that Doug can hand off to a warrior-woman of his acquaintance (EDIT 2: "Utena, not for the weak or the fearful is the path of the warrior maid..."), or it might even create a simulacrum of Kethry, Kerowyn, or a generic warrior-maid to wield Need, but it probably won't call down Rule 63. - DHBirr - 06-18-2012 This is very certainly from Valdemar's world: Kerowyn later became a Herald, and Talia has mentioned having sung this song. I'm not going to try to judge whether this'd give Doug a power or not, but there's a least a good chance that he heard this while he was there, although Bob once specified that Doug left that world before Kero came to Valdemar. He said, if I remember right, that it was a pity since he thought their attitudes would've played off each other nicely. ----- Big Brother is watching you. And damn, you are so bloody BORING. - Proginoskes - 06-18-2012 Yeah, I've read exactly one book by Lackey; it was one of the Vows and Honor series, but I can't recall which: it was five or six years ago. I'd be really impressed with myself if I managed to recall Need's properties correctly before I fix this grievous gap in my fantasy reading. - robkelk - 06-18-2012 Proginoskes Wrote:EDIT: Eehh, probably not. I'm guessing not the http://www.eviloverlord.com/lists/overlord.html]Evil Overlord List's Rule 63 ("Bulk trash will be disposed of in incinerators, not compactors. And they will be kept hot, with none of that nonsense about flames going through accessible tunnels at predictable intervals."), but I have no idea what other Rule 63 you could be referring to... -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. Adversaries remain citizens of the same state, common subjects of the same sovereign, servants of the same law." - Michael Ignatieff, addressing Stanford University in 2012 - Honorbridge - 06-18-2012 From Know your Meme: Rule 63 is an internet adage which states that for every fictional character, there exists a counterpart of opposite gender. It is often considered part of the Anonymous list known as Rules of the Internet, and among that list it is the most popular after Rules 1 & 2 and Rule 34. A: For every given male character, there is a female version of that character. B: For every given female character, there is a male version of that character. - Bob Schroeck - 06-25-2012 We already have the Rule 63 version of Doug floating around the forums -- http://drunkardswalkforums.yuku.com/top ... y-Melodies]Mary Sue Sangnoir, aka Mary Melodies. "Kerowyn's Ride" is an old favorite, and yeah, it is part of the Velgarth/Valdemar stories. Kerowyn is Kethry's granddaughter, who inherits Need and becomes a mercenary captain became a herald. As has been mentioned in the [%[link=http://www.accessdenied-rms.net/dw-faq.shtml#1c]http://www.accessdenied-rms.net/dw-faq.shtml#1c]DW FAQ, Doug left Valdemar well before Kero got there. Doug will actually know this song (and several others from the setting), because Delandra will make it a hobby to translate them into English after she acquires the language -- essentially, the songs as Lackey wrote them in our world are Delandra's work in the worlds of the Walk. As far as the suggested power(s) is concerned... Uh, I dunno. About either. Need is about as unique an artifact as you can get short of the possession of a god, and I think before Doug could even begin to manifest a cheap imitation he'd've had to handled the real thing -- or know more about than a mention in a couple songs. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. |
