My Dad's in the hospital - Logan Darklighter - 10-11-2008 Giving you guys a heads up - I won't be online tonight for City of Heroes. Most probably tomorrow either, or even Sunday. My Dad went into surgery on Tuesday to have his knee replaced (they did the other one a few years ago.) and there have been complications. The original plan was he was going to be out of the hospital today and I would've spent the evening tonight and Saturday over at his place helping out with things (like reaching up to a top shelf or helping him move around). But - well, my Dad has been on blood thinners for years due to high blood pressure. And for some reason - I'm not clear on the details - he had to have a blood transfusion today. A good friend of his has been with him at the hospital and says he's been "shaking". I'm not sure what that means. I called Dad the other day, he seemed to be okay, if a little woozy (to be expected). But I called him today and he was -really- out of it. I called Sharon up - the friend I mentioned - and she went up there to check on him. I called later while she was there and got the above description. He's conscious, but NOT feeling well. So I'm headed up to the hospital to stay with him there tonight. My brother will take over for me later, but I'll probably be back there again tomorrow. I believe I may have mentioned before - Dad's been beating the odds of his family medical history to the tune of about 25+ years of when his father and grandfather died of either heart attack or stroke. Miracles of modern medicine and all. But shit like this makes me worried sick to the pit of my spine. So, even if I'm back at my house, I'm likely not going to be in the mood for playing City of Heroes or anything this weekend. But I'll check back when I can. In the meantime - for those of you who believe in such things - send a prayer on my Dad's behalf? It can't hurt, that's for sure. I'll check back when I can. Hopefully this isn't anywhere near as serious as I'm making it sound. - Wiregeek - 10-11-2008 my best wishes go with you. My dad's going in for reconstructive surgery on his shoulder in January, and I'm terrified (he's had both hips replaced, and died on the table during the first one). "No can brain today. And I guess it can't hurt to mention here that Peggy and I are going to be away and offline from Sunday night through Tuesday, taking care of my dad while my mom has eye surgery. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - Logan Darklighter - 10-12-2008 Okay, seems Dad is ok. Not great, but he is on the mend. He was just in a lot more pain this time out for some reason. More medicated as a result. One of the side effects was he wasn't replacing his blood loss from the operation as fast as he should. He didn't have to have a full transfusion/replacement, just a "top off" as it were. They also kept him in bed too long. At his age, he has to stay active on a daily basis or he starts losing strength, and he was on his back for 4-5 days. They really should've given him the transfusion and extra pain meds right away so he could be in rehab and strengthening back up. I don't understand why they delayed that this time out. He's gone through this exact same thing 4 years ago with his other knee and was out of the hospital in 48 hours. Anyway - stayed with him through the night and into the afternoon yesterday. He's out of the bed and on into rehab now, so hopefully things will be improving. With any luck, maybe he can get strong enough to get on his way home tomorrow. Thanks for the kind responses. They mean a lot to me. - ECSNorway - 10-12-2008 Good to see he's still with you, man. -- Sucrose Octanitrate. Here's hoping he gets stronger quickly. My mother came through her eye operation with flying colors -- she came back home 24 hours later and only by the redness of her eye could you even tell anything had been done. Peg had her own hospital adventure this morning -- she hit her head on part of the shower door and ended up with a profusely bleeding little wound on her forehead. She chose to go to the hospital with the emergency responders and after a CAT scan and a little surgical glue was discharged about three hours later. Very minor, but the ER doctor told her to stay home from work for 3 days. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. |
