When you're too poor to afford fireworks... - Bob Schroeck - 03-26-2009 ...what do you do? If you're from a certain Chinese farming village, you http://www.break.com/index/using-molten ... ref=track3]throw molten iron against a wall. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - Wiregeek - 03-27-2009 O_o that's pretty freaking awesome. "No can brain today. Want cheezeburger." From NGE: Nobody Dies, by Gregg Landsman http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5579457/1/NGE_Nobody_Dies - Black Aeronaut - 03-27-2009 And injuries are uncommon? Daaaaannnnggg... ETA: Just realized this: If you're really smart, you can take a reasonably strong magnet and recover a good deal of that iron afterwards. Not like the Chinese didn't have magnets when this thing got started five-hundred years ago. - Acyl - 03-28-2009 That's...amazing. Jeez. For me, though, there's another fascinating thing. The video explains that the name of this thing is 'dashuhua', and that it means 'beating flowers in the tree'. That's a liberal translation, though. Literally it's simply 'Beat Tree Flower', and that sounds hilariously awesome to my Chinese-speaking sensibilities. =D The video also mentions this is a Lantern Festival celebration in that part of China. More generally, that can refer to the end of the Chinese New Year period. Chinese New Year celebrations, of course, traditionally involve brightly lit stuff, firecrackers, and yes, of course, fireworks. These days most stuff is tame, non-explosive, and electrically powered. But THAT is one hell of a variation though. -- Acyl |
