Latin translation? - Bob Schroeck - 05-05-2009

Can anyone help me with a bit of Latin? I want to change the subject of the famous old line Nos morituri te salutamus from "we who are about to
die" to "We who are dead". Can anyone do that for me, or point me to a website that can?

Thanks!

I'm not entirely sure- that morituri is a form we haven't covered yet. I'll ask my teacher on Wednesday.

Edit: Looking over it again, I'm fairly sure the phrase you want is moriti te salutamus, but I'll
double-check it. Morituri is the future participle of morior, to die; and
morior is conjugated in an absolutely wonky way. I'm about 90% sure I'm right- the only way I'd be wrong
is if I'm misreading my book, and morior actually doesn't follow all the rules of participles I know.

I just got an e-mail from my Latin prof back- the correct phrase is morti te salutamus. Hope that helps.

I'm fairly sure you still need the Nos at the begining, but yes 'nos morti te salutamus' sounds right. Of course I don't actually know latin,
so take it with a grain of salt. (I'm using my knowledge of italian, french and other latin based languages to get a feel for latin.)

Thank you, that's exactly what I need. Dunno if anyone will ever see it, just a goofy little idea in a development file that may never see the light of
day. But thanks anyway!

The 'nos' is implied- it's not strictly necessary.

At risk of nitpicking, I will point out that the original phrase in in the third person : "Ave, Caesar, morituri te salutant" ("Hail, Caesar,
those who are about to die salute you")

Unless you have a reason to change "those" for "we", the proper phrase would be: "morti te salutant"

Thanks, that's a good detail to have. I've made note of it in the dev file.

Nope.

In the interests of preventing a game of volley-guess, I will simply say right now that, if it is used at all, it will be in a Step where you will not be
expecting it.

SisPri?

(C'mon, nobody would expect a "we're going to die" scene in that setting...)
