Disney Buys Marvel - Epsilon - 08-31-2009 Excelsior? The usual geek handwringing ensues across the internet. Though hey, maybe Kingdom Hearts 3 just became the most awesome game ever. -------------- Epsilon - ordnance11 - 08-31-2009 Will it fly though? __________________ Into terror!, Into valour! Charge ahead! No! Never turn Yes, it's into the fire we fly And the devil will burn! - Scarlett Pimpernell - Bob Schroeck - 08-31-2009 Yow. I can't decide if this is potentially awesome, or if Marvel is about to get bowdlerized into irrelevancy. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - Epsilon - 08-31-2009 Keep in mind that Disney has been able to release lots of adult material under their Miramax imprint. --------------- Epsilon - OpMegs - 08-31-2009 Quote: Bob Schroeck wrote:Well, if you're referring to their printed stock, Joe Quesada was doing a good job of that without any exterior assistance with "Brand New Day". --- "Oh, silver blade, forged in the depths of the beyond. Heed my summons and purge those who stand in my way. Lay waste." - Logan Darklighter - 08-31-2009 I heard this and my thought was, Meh... Thanks to Joey Cheese, Marvel's already "dead to me". I honestly can't see how this could make things -worse-. - Bob Schroeck - 09-01-2009 Quote:Well, if you're referring to their printed stock, Joe Quesada was doing a good job of thatOh, right, yeah, forgot about that. (Haven't been a Marvel reader in a dog's age, been getting all my info second-hand.) -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - Herr Bad Moon - 09-01-2009 At the very least, Disney won't mind if people get married. --- Jon "And that must have caused my dad's brain to break in half, replaced by a purely mechanical engine of revenge!" - robkelk - 09-01-2009 But are we going to go from "nobody stays dead" to "nobody dies"? -- Rob Kelk "Governments have no right to question the loyalty of those who oppose them. Adversaries remain citizens of the same state, common subjects of the same sovereign, servants of the same law." - Michael Ignatieff, addressing Stanford University in 2012 - Bob Schroeck - 09-01-2009 Simple. You just cut out the middleman. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. ... - Rev Dark - 09-01-2009 Clap if you believe in Captain America... I have mixed feelings about this. While I am a little suspicious of Disney Entertainment and their track record with handling properties, I am wondering if this is going to be a hilarious screw you to Universal Studios - whose theme park used multiple Marvel Hero themed rides. On the movie side, I want you all picture your favorite Marvel Hero portrayed by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Tim Allen, or Nick Cage... okay, you don't have to work too hard on that last one. Clawing your eyes out yet? Tim Allen is Dr. Strange - Eye of Agamato 'O 'O 'O. On the other side, the idea of the people at Pixar having access to some of the Marvel mythology is a very interesting thought. Some people will consider it the end of the world, and Galactus is wearing mouse ears. And I feel like such a nerd for writing that last sentence. Shayne - Valles - 09-01-2009 If the merger leads to excellence, my general approval of the existence of quality entertainment will lead me to dub this Awesome. If the merger leads to horrific disneyfication and mutilation of childhood dreams of spandex, my longstanding contempt for the 'Big Two' model of the American comics industry will lead me to dub this Comedy. Either way, I think I win. ^_^ =========== =============================================== "V, did you do something foolish?" "Yes, and it was glorious." - Bob Schroeck - 09-01-2009 Just before I left for work this morning I came across an online editorial about this from the New York Daily News. Looks like we're not the only people expecting the worst from this. -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - Werehawk - 09-01-2009 Well a editorial cartoon I saw on my way to work sums it all up... When Superhero Mutants Go Disney --Werehawk-- My mom's brief take on upcoming Guatemalan Elections "In last throes of preelection activities. Much loudspeaker vote pleading." - Logan Darklighter - 09-01-2009 Y'know, one could argue that this is a direct result of Joe Quesada mis-managing the brand so awfully. - Matrix Dragon - 09-02-2009 Hopefully, Disney does something about the 'deal with satan/one night stands' spiderman. - Bob Schroeck - 09-02-2009 Do we really want the precedent of Disney meddling to that level? -- Bob --------- Then the horns kicked in... ...and my shoes began to squeak. - Logan Darklighter - 09-02-2009 Normally I'd be very against meddling from Disney. But if they undid everything Joe Quesada (and others) did over the last 15-20 years - up to and including erasing it all from continuity and starting over - I wouldn't shed a tear or lift a finger to stop them. It's really THAT BAD what has happened at Marvel. To the point where Disney-fication might actually be an improvement. As eye-gougingly, sanity blasting as that sounds, it's nothing more than the simple truth. - jpub - 09-02-2009 I can't help but think this is a good thing, considering the gong show Marvel's been lately. But then, I'm a DC fan. - Matrix Dragon - 09-02-2009 There's a list of the competitions reactions that really intrigues me, and a post from a friend of mine that I'm going to just cut and paste here because he says it better then I can.
