I just came back from seeing the movie.
First let me say that I enjoyed it, and it was a fun movie.
But it could have been so much more.
There were several tropes used to good effect in the film, and I enjoyed most of the characters.
But in the end it went for the formulaic ending.
I would have much preferred the darker ending (all of them being sacrificed to give the machine a soul) but I see how that wouldn't have flown as it is a kids movie.
I won't dig into specific annoyances, to refrain from spoiling it for those who haven't seen it.
It could have been on the level of Toy Story or Finding Nemo. Instead it is just another summer movie, a good one, but no blockbuster.

Yeah, they hinted heavily towards that specific dark ending. Frankly, I thought that could have been played in a far more epic ending than the one that they
got.
Not sure you could have avoided the "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!" moment entailed however.
