The really interesting thing is that both sets are made with identical ingredients. McDonald's is actually quite scrupulous about that -- your average burger gotten at the counter is cooked and assembled very quickly by a set of teenagers who would really rather be somewhere else, but for the commercials, McDonald's actually has "food stylists" who create the sandwiches seen in their advertising (plus they use a few tricks like piling all the toppings along the edge facing the camera). They actually made a video a few years ago to address this (very common) observation and were very forthright about what's done:

Note to IT staff: Lie to your supervisors/managers that your servers are so damn sensitive to vibrations that when they scream at you next door to the server rack, where the office is, there is a measurable drop in performance throughout the company.
I mean, they won't treat you less poorly, but maybe they will scream less?

I would not want to live there. It smacks of a designer's ego and none of the needs of a population. It seems CIAM has returned, and not for the better.

The Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne?

Anyway, that doesn't look anything like a residential area. It doesn't look anything like anything I might guess at. If each of those octagons didn't have an obvious entrance on each side, I'd suspect it was some kind of military structure. No fences or walls, so unlikely to be a prison. Failing that, I don't have a clue. But maybe Google Images does...

I stand corrected. According to a 2021 article on CNN (image 4), this is the hub of Egypt's new administrative capital, kind of like Brasilia in the desert, where they want to move all the government and financial stuff from Cairo. It's apparently called "6th of October City".

I thought it was a cluster of missile silos until I looked close enough to see the shadows indicating that the stuff in each circle had a few floors worth of elevation, but .even the blatantly corrupt and incompetent countries are usually with it enough to not route passenger overflights (and/or repressive enough to interdict any photos if they did) if they have enough military and economic grunt to build one in the first place.

To my knowledge it's supposed to be the HQ of the Egyptian military.

I love the smell of rotaries in the morning. You know one time, I got to work early, before the rush hour. I walked through the empty carpark, I didn't see one bloody Prius or Golf. And that smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole carpark, smelled like.... ....speed.

One day they're going to ban them.

And that's 300 posts, ending off with some spectacular photos.

New thread is here
