SOTD, 3/5/03
03-06-2003, 05:48 AM
I am caught in a trap, there is no turning back, I'm finally facing the fear
The sky is on fire and up with the flames, my hope and my dreams disappear
So bring me the power, I'll be the king of the land and the seas
Show me a way to go, let me fight with my body and soul
Let me be the native son with freedom in my heart
Life will never be the same when spirits are calling my name
My name...
Let me out of the darkness, the shadow of pain, and I'm keeping my promise to you
My people, my spirit, the home of my heart, you're with me wherever I go
So bring me the power, I'll be the king of the land and the seas
I've got a way to go, let me fight with my body and soul
Let me be the native son with freedom in my heart
Life will never be the same when spirits are calling my name
My name...
So bring me the power, I'll be the king of the land and the seas
I've got a way to go, let me fight with my body and soul
Let me be the native son with freedom in my home
Life will never be the same when spirits are calling my name
Spirits are calling my name
-- When Spirits Are Calling My Name,
Recorded by Roger Pontare
Written by Thomas Holmstrand, Linda Jansson & Peter Dahl
(How's that for a substitute for "Cruel Angel's Thesis"?)

This won't work for Eva, think I, think I, but it's very cool nonetheless... I was obsessed from the first time I heard it.
Joss Whedon - Theme from Firefly
Take my love, take my land,
Take me where I cannot stand.
I don't care, I'm still free,
You can't take the sky from me.
Take me out to the black,
Tell 'em I ain't comin' back.
Burn the land and boil the sea,
You can't take the sky from me.
Have no place I can be,
Since I found Serenity.
But you can't take the sky from me.
And something that won't suit DW-eva -either-, but sure seems to suit the original... Eyrie folks might recognize my having brought it up there.
Lyle Lovett - Lungs
Well won't you lend your lungs to me
Mine are collapsing
Plant my feet and bitterly breathe
Up the time that's passing
And breath I'll take and breath I'll give
And pray the day's not poison
Stand among the ones that live
In lonely indecision
Fingers walk the darkness down
Mind is on the midnight
Gather up the gold you've found
You fool it's only moonlight
And if you try to take it home
Your hands will turn to butter
You better leave this dream alone
Try to find another
Salvation sat and crossed herself
Called the devil partner
Wisdom burned upon a shelf
Who'll kill the raging cancer
Seal the river at its mouth
Take the water prisoner
Fill the sky with screams and cries
Bathe in fiery answers
Jesus was an only son
And love his only concept
Strangers cry in foreign tongues
And dirty up the doorstep
And I for one and you for two
Ain't got the time for outside
Just keep your injured looks to you
We'll tell the world that we tried
Blessed be.
-n
(Yes, Buffy Fans - it's the same Mr. Whedon. Goddamn networks.)

Are anyone familiar with the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), that song was Swedens contender two years ago if memory does not fail me. The thing about Roger Pontare is the he really stood out visually against the other contenders.
Since ESC is shown on TV across the world most participants are (or at least try to be) fairly telegenic, Pontare was somewhat overweight with heavy stubble and wearing what looks like some kind of Indian costume with a Pom-Pom on top of his head, to be frank he looked ridiculus.
Also at about the same time he was accused of being a rascist in swedish newspapers.
This page got a picture, it's in swedish but if you can read it it's about Pontares response when a swedish rascist party praised the song:

You remember correctly, at least according to the page where I got the lyrics. I'm not surprised about the costume; there are distinctly American Indian touches in the song, for no reason that I can really understand, although they do make it sound a little more interesting.
(After checking out the link.) Well, the costume was certainly ... interesting. Not as authentic or awful as I'd imagined. Still, quite bad, yes...
I still like the song anyway.

So do I. I like the Swedish version even more.
And that outfit loses a bit of it's impact when you don't have the other contenders to contrast with.

Now you've got me curious about the Swedish version; I'll have to go find it.
And I don't doubt the other contenders were all in the usual glittering show-businessy get-ups, or in evening wear. I can imagine the contrast.

The swedish text is on the page I linked to for the picture, right after the title "Nr vindarna viskar mitt namn ", that translates roughly to "When the winds are whispering my name".

Oh, I saw the Swedish text -- I meant find an audio file of the Swedish rendition. "When the winds are whispering my name", eh? Sounds like something was gained in translation...
