Shadows: The Horror Movie Heroes (My Hero Academia, 40 chapters, 71K words).

Izuku Midoriya and Hitoshi Shinso are never going to be the kind of heroes that make civilains think ‘oh, thank god we’re saved,’ when they arrive at the scene. There's too much prejudice against them, so a kid with a villain quirk and one with no quirk at all are never going to be able to inspire that sort of trust.

So instead of becoming heroes that bring hope, they decide to become the next best thing.

Middle school students Izuku and Hitoshi meet, seriously train to become underground heroes, and test their progress by volunteering to play minor villains in a week long UA exercise for second year hero students. The traumatized UA students wind up needing therapy.

Elbowsnapper's Just Deserts was originally posted to Spacebattles, but the Royal Road version has been revised and edited. It's a My Hero Academia OC fic, a little grittier than canon but what can you expect when MC is pretty much a rerolled (Marvel) Sandman?

It's complete in the sense that the MC's story arc has been told, though only the first school year's worth of BnHA canon is addressed. It ends like a novel that's open for a sequel, in other words, but is not unsatisyfing. No knowledge of BnHA is required, and indeed it would probably be more gripping without the spoilers as MC-kun investigates and discovers some of the secrets of the world, which is a thing I say very rarely indeed, as the mystery genre is one I particularly despise, only exceed by zombie apocalypse survival horror. Take this then as a strong recommendation to have surpassed that bias and earned the attention.

Royal Road makes it hard to get a word count, but lists it as being a thousand "pages" for whatever that's worth. Nominally twelve chapters, but some are split into multiple parts.

Nathan Goldwag, of whom I've written before, has turned his attention to Steven Universe, first with something in the scholarly mode that first awared me of him: The True History of the Gem War.

“The True History of the Gem War”, also known as “The Book of Rose Quartz” and “The Time Before the Flood” is one of the most intriguing and controversial works of ancient Near Eastern mythology and history known to modern scholars. For nearly two centuries, it had been the focus of obsession and study, and yet we are no closer to deciphering its secrets than we were when it was first unveiled.

Traditionally, “The True History” is said to have been discovered by famed Anglish explorer and cataloguer Buddy Buckwick in 1762, while he was exploring ancient ruins in North Africa. Though only six thousand words, arranged into seven tablets, “The True History” appeared to be a syncretic approach to ancient Mesopotamian myth and legend, weaving together elements of “The Epic of Gilgamesh” and the heretical Biblical “Book of Enoch” into a narrative of a ‘War in Heaven’ or ‘Angelic Rebellion’. The text also included clear references to the Egyptian pantheon, and to other ancient Hebrew texts and Mesopotamian legends, and was written in a creole of Aramaic and Hebrew.

In a world that's just lost its greatest hero, can Obi-Wan and the Resistance defeat the Eggman Empire? It may be difficult, especially given that the mad doctor's right hand seems to have the unmistakable powers of a Dark Jedi...

35 chapters and over 200k words. I only vaguely follow Star Wars and know nothing about Sonic lore, but still enjoyed the story. There was excellent world building, and the fusion of the settings worked well.

While I would not put intrigue and slow romance at the very top of my most despised literary genres (that summit of furious disgust is ever and inevitably held by zombie apocalypse survival horror) they definitely live among the top five, and it is therefore a testament to the strength of the sheer craftsmanship in the characterization and plotting of The Winter of Widows that had its finale come a week earlier I would have counted it the best thing I read all year. It being January 7rh for a few more minutes as I write this, that seems far too paltry a compliment, but I hope the spirit of it should still shine through.

This one's a keeper.

Just want to stop lurking for a quick minute to give a firm +1 for Winter of Widows. Even if you don't usually like Ice and Fire fanfics, its still awesome.

It takes place in a different time period than most of the canon works, and does enough world-building that it does that WELL.
This author does dialogue exquisitely.

Ah, yes, it's a century or so before the main serries, and either just after or at the tail end of what the Dance of Dragons material covers - I'm not very familiar with the setting as such, as one might expect from having a distaste for pseudomedeival fantasy and political thriollers, even setting aside ASoIaaF late game turning into zombie trash.

Tanya thought that writing a paper on the potential applications of ancient magic would be her ticket to being assigned to boring, useless, SAFE research work far from the frontlines. But her crazy theory turned out to work well beyond her expectations, and now, as the head of Division Y, she has to manage the mad scientists and occultists under her command, the eldritch monsters they have created, and the demands of their superiors for more miracles to fight the Great War with.
Is this all Being X's plan ?!

A Young Woman's Weaponization of the Mythos is effectively a Youjo Senki fusion with Achtung Cthulhu!/Cthulhutech, though it maintains the alternate-WWI  setting of the first rather than WWII or a nebulous near-future. It also maintains a far more hopeful and (with occasional exceptions for dramatic impact) lighter tone than the majority of war stories or almost any Lovecraft/Derleth material, but I for one count its lack of faithful adherence in that matter as a positive. It has also just had the epilogue posted, thereby becoming eligible for listing in this thread, totaling at 340k words in 44 chapters.

Two fics we used to keep up with have concluded while some of us (certainly myself) were just watching them as notifications. First, as I recall, and certainly in alphabetical order by height, is the HP Peggy Sue saga Flowers by the Wayside.

After her husband is unfaithful and her cookie-cutter perfect world is turned on its head, Petunia Evans Dursley finds herself in her old hometown, full of regrets and feeling that her life has been without purpose. Before she can quietly take her own life, she is given an impossible offer by a long-dead figure from the magical world: return to the past, and rewrite her own history. Seeing it as a chance to make up for her biggest regret, Petunia accepts and finds herself in the middle of a Wizarding war she knew little about, protecting the younger sister she tried to forget by seeking help from the one person in the magical world she knows how to find.

A what-if story beginning in the latter years of the first war against Voldemort, where an unlikely alliance turns into an even more unlikely romance, and the bonds that bloom from it will change the course of Wizarding history.
