[RFC][DSKS][Character] The Cousin now has a name...
[RFC][DSKS][Character] The Cousin now has a name...
#1
...And that is Quick Stone, because he's quick to come to a decision and move on it and steadfast like stone.
Quick Stone had a pretty tragic childhood himself... but first a bit about the family tree, just so we're all on the same page.
Zeke and Quick are actually second-cousins, once removed through their Great Grandfather, the late Chief Stand Tall.  He had a number of sons, but the only two that survived to marry and have children were Dashing Bear (Zeke's Grandfather) and Cold Snow (Quick's Grandfather).  Cold Snow is pretty much what you would expect of someone gifted with such a name.  He's a cold man, petty and bureaucratic.  And on top of it all, he's prone to fits of rage.
Like his brother, Cold Snow only had one daughter, a girl named Soaring Fox.  The polar opposite of her old man, Soaring Fox was warm, helpful, and affectionate (and not a little bit sneaky and playful).  She married a fellow tribesman named Tall Rain.  Tall Rain is honestly as good of a man you could ever hope to meet.  He was widely regarded as a peacemaker in the tribe and it was rumored that he would soon take Cold Snow's place on the tribal counsel.
Quick Stone was born under auspices that lead a good deal of the tribal counsel (and, in particular, Cold Snow) to believe that he was the one that was prophesied to be the Avatar of Raven.  From day one, he was groomed as such.
But then, six years later, Ezekiel was born.  With the markings that he bore, it was utterly undeniable that it was Zeke who was Raven's chosen avatar, and not Quick Stone.
Cold Snow went blind with rage, and in a berserk fury he killed his daughter and son-in-law.  It was only quick thinking on the part of other tribesmen that Quick Stone at least was saved.  When the old man finally came to his senses, he was ashamed of what he had done.  It caused no small amount of controversy amongst the tribe, but it was decided that it would be enough to strip Cold Snow of his Counsel status.  It was considered that the pain of knowing he killed his family was considered to be punishment enough.  In time, he was even granted permission to spend time with his Grandson, though only when supervised (fortunately, the child had not witnesses the violent deaths of his parents).
Even so, Cold Snow was not one to give his approval lightly.  He would constantly challenge his grandson to forge himself into a better man until he had no equal.  Quick Stone took this to heart and set about aiming to become the tribe's next shaman.  Under normal circumstances this would likely have been Zeke, but since he had another calling it would fall to Quick Stone instead.
Zeke himself was no stranger to the tribe by any stretch.  His ability to hide had eventually earned him his own name amongst the tribesmen: Hidden Leaf.
Quick Stone had been quick to study under his Great Uncle Dashing Bear, and it helped that he had several years on Zeke.  However, when Zeke was placed under Quick Stone's tutelage (in part because Dashing Bear was busy at the time, and also in part because Quick Stone needed the experience), the older cousin was gobsmacked by how quickly Zeke seemed to not only pick up on things, but then develop his technique to a stage more advanced than Quick Stone's.
Quick Stone was torn between anger and bemusement.  While Zeke had made an impression, it didn't have much chance to set.  The sudden and horrific death of Zeke's mother, Soft Crow, had rocked the entire tribe.  Soon followed by his father's disastrous wreck that left him with a permanent disability, Zeke was left in the care of the tribe.  At this time, Quick Stone had only sympathy for his younger cousin.  (It should also be noted that Teletha, being inseperable from Zeke at this time, stayed with him at the behest of Dashing Bear.  She became so closely enmeshed with Zeke's affairs that she soon earned a name herself: Gray Leaf - because if you ever had to find Hidden Leaf, you would only need to find the Gray one, first.)
For a time, Quick Stone, Dashing Bear, Zeke and Teletha were an odd, but close knit family unit among the tribe.  Cold Snow did not approve, but he held his peace until Zeke and Teletha had to go.  Afterward, he laid into Quick Stone and reminded him of his anger at how the child, Avatar or no, had been able to show up the Shaman-in-Training.
When Zeke would show up in the later years, his reception with Quick Stone was unusually cool.  Even though this troubled Zeke, he took it in stride.  Quick Stone, meanwhile, hid his growing anger at how the people lauded the boy and how he had seemed to surpass him in every way.  Even worse, Quick Stone would remember how his mother would tell him that he was the special one, the chosen one.
When Zeke went to Japan, Dashing Bear confronted Quick Stone.  He noticed how the young man would act around Zeke and the two had it out.  It eventually ended with Dashing Bear declaring that as long as he pursued this pointless path of bitter rivalry, Quick Stone would never be their Shaman.  Enraged, Quick Stone struck out on his own and began his quest for personal power - if Raven had not chosen him to be his Avatar, then maybe, he figured, some other worthwhile deity would.
Little did he understand that while Gods may answer prayers... sometimes, they will do so in twisted ways.  And thus begins Quick Stone's tragic downward spiral.
For more fun, his theme music is A3's Woke Up This Morning.  Especially the version with the long spoken intro (even if it the spoken introduction doesn't really fit Quick Stone, it sets the mood beautifully).  Special thanks to Bob Schroeck for that link to the song on Youtube in another forum.

No counseling? No attempts at healing? Just demotion? Cold Snow is going to be the same person he was before giving in to his rage... and that's going to teach Quick Stone that giving in to rage is an act with few if any consequences.

Quick Stone will be a more dangerous person to be around because of this - to compare him to the Full Metal Panic villains, he'll be more Gauron than Leonard.

Hmmmmm... He has no circle of companions, so he draws his own... (Poorly?)

Quick Stone is going to see himself as being at the center of the situation, and isn't likely to even consider the idea of compromise... (Not that he would compromise, but even the concept will be foreign to him.) He isn't likely to "play well with others" - he's going to want to be in charge.

My initial reaction was that this had gone too far in drama and angst. Cold Snow killing Quick Stone's parrents is the part that maybe sends it over the top, especially as losing Council status seems like a very light penalty. It also seems odd that Quick Stone would care about Cold Snow's aproval after this.

However, after further consideration, this is a story of people who have gods taking an active interest in their lives. We have scores of greek epics and tragedies telling us how messed up that can get.

No, I don't believe the world has gone mad.  In order for it to go mad it would need to have been sane at some point.

Rob, you hit this one right on the nose. Quick Stone is going to be The Boss type. He will not settle for anything less than being The Man, and he is dangerously ambitious. And it is all fueled by an insane desire to be better than his little cousin - even if that means the two must come to blows.

It will really be hurtful for Zeke because he genuinely loves Quick Stone. For Zeke, Quick Stone represents a big-brother type. And while he had positive male role models in his father and grandfather, Quick Stone was simply more accessible from a child's perspective.

When he initially shows up, I'd definitely rank his Danger Level at around that of Gauron's. But he won't be associated with Mythril just yet. He'll have come into his 'new power' and he'll be just getting a feel for it... so he goes and finds the best stick to measure himself by: Zeke.

After Zeke (barely?) defeats him, he'll probably get chastised by his chaos-corrupted deity, and then put on a sever power restriction until he can learn to do more with less as Zeke seems to have done so. And this would be what prompts him to turn to other sources like Amalgam, Doom Phantom, Haposai, rival Oni Warlords, etc.

And Deadpan... I am definitely planning on making this epic like a Greek Tragedy... only without the whole rocks-fall-everyone-dies theme. There'll be death, there will be the skirting of the edge of Grim Dark... but no 'Tastes Like Dirt' moments.

Instead of killed in a rage, have the 'rents taken as hostages for some trial only the Chosen One could have passed and die 'cause he didn't and the actual Chosen was too young to even try. If you're going for epic mindscrew dickery with a segauro wrapped in barbed wire and lubed up with strychnine, you might as well light it on fire as well.

Hmmm.... Maybe, but that would just be going beyond, "Okay, he snapped and killed his daughter and son-in-law... Okay, let's not be too drastic about this..." and straight into, "Okay, he snapped and thinks he's Jigsaw now. Who's the best with a hunting rifle here?"

And that's probably what would have happened. In one case you have the Old Man going off the deep end so quickly that there's barely anytime to do more than save the kid. In the other... there probably would have been enough time for the Lighthorsemen to confront him... with rifles.
ETA:  It occurs to me, suddenly, that Quick Stone should have his own following among the Tribe.  Pretty sure that this should be his personal guard/servitors/mooks.  And that would make things just that much more difficult for Zeke because these would be people he knows.  (Of course, the whole 'know your enemy' thing won't be an issue.)

I....weowch....ayep we've now got a Gotham Rogues One Bad Day event confirmed (if OBD is not known check Chris Dee's Cat Tales for more).

And yes, Quick Stone should have an following and tribe entourage for they'll be thinking along the lines of what if he's the spare Raven avatar or he's meant to be the one of another power/sprit.

Wow.  I never really thought of it that way before, but you're right.  (O_O)

If the tribe really is one where some form of the light horse still has jurisdiction, then there might be a finite number of tribes it could actually be, and their legal methods and penalties might be well known enough that an informed person might be able to say what could and could not happen.

I don't think I am particularly informed.

I know that in the late nineteenth century that some of the tribes considered imprisonment cruel and unusual, and so their tribal police only practiced corporeal and capital punishment.

I'd suggest that alcohol might have been involved in your story's murder. I'd further suggest that part of the leniency for the killing might be him, afterwards, going off alcohol entirely in remorse. Or that if alcohol was not involved, he might have spent much of his later life as a wretched, hateful drunk. (Thinking back over a case I'd heard of reminded me of the alcohol factor. I don't remember the story well enough to retell it.)

Anyway, I had this written up a while back, I'll see if I can come up with something on the actual presentation any time soon.
