ADV ceases operations
09-02-2009, 01:45 AM
As ADV, that is - they've undergone a major reorganization.
Just the facts, ma'am: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/20 ... -companies]ADV Films Shuts Down Parent Transfers Assets to Other Companies
Informed commentary: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/editori ... -adv-films]What's Happening with ADV Films
Now, if I'm reading this correctly, ADV is getting out from under the thumb of a hostile shareholder, shaking up the corporate management, and splitting the less-profitable arms off into separate businesses while keeping their core-competency mostly-intact, at the cost of its name (one of the most recognizable in North-American anime fandom). Here's hoping it works, although I can't see any reason why it shouldn't.

Aye, I say it is RIP for ADV, which is a sad thing indeed. They may be able to use the lable, but I somehow doubt it.
They had a good run though - From 1982 to now. Company was only two years younger than me.

It's been a little painful watching them fall. Frankly ADV Manga has been dead to be for some time now even to the tiny degree it was still alive*. And
while I realize ADV Manga was a separate from the anime arm the problem was bad enough that I wasn't even going to touch an ADV anime release in anything
but complete season box set. Hopefully the new company will be able to pick up the pieces and get moving again, because at one time the ADV logo was on
it's own enough to get me to at least pick something up to read the synopsis.
*Hmm. Me still bitter about unannounced cancellations, lack of communication, and an apparent refusal by other branches of the company to acknowledge that
there was even a hangnails worth of a problem? Nah, not at all.

Wasn't NewTypeUSA part of ADV's stable?
*Googles real quick*
Ah, yes it was. Yet another sympton of what was going on.
Oh Sweet! YUA season 2! I love this series and am glad someone got the new season.
And because my inner sad otaku demanded it
(To the Tune of Oh Danny Boy.)
Oh ADV, The Otaku are calling
From shore to shore, and 'cross the internet
They cry you're gone, and all your titles scattered
'Tis you, 'Tis you we'll miss and glad we met
But come ye back as AEsir and as Valkyrie
As Seraphim and Section23
And we'll be here, awaiting all new titles
Oh ADV, You left but returned to me.

Actually, Season 2 is the one where Saori becomes a policewoman. The new season, Full Throttle, is AFAIK still unlicenced...

Mind if I repost that to Usenet (with attribution, of course)?

Correct "hee" to "here" first if you do, Rob.

... or change it to "squee", I mean, they're otaku after all.

Go for it Rob. Correction was made BTW.
I did one for Gary Gygax as well when he passed away, though I re-wrote the whole song and not just one verse. Never did get to see it printed in KoDT

Thanks. I don't know whether it's available in Google Groups yet, but an advanced groups search for Message-ID 4aa11056.9349234@news.individual.net
should turn it up when it finally appears there.
