Because the Kerbals being real is utterly terrifying. We couldn't risk giving them Nuclear powered sharks as well Tongue

I suppose it depends on the status of fricin' laser beam research as to whether doom would be inevitable. Laser beams are notably difficult to evade after all, and good at frying things after slicing them into pieces.
