Whether or not the tarantula incident actually occurred -- one of my classes kept one as a pet and it was not bitey at all -- I feel like all of these people are missing the point. Spend any time watching spiders, and they're terrifying. Alien predators that sit in wait to entrap their next victim. They leave their victims alive, trapped to eat later, with no hope of escape.  It feels evil, a premeditated murder in literal cold blood. One can't help but imagine being the spider's victim, being trapped and awaiting certain doom at the poisonous fangs of a monster.

Ungoliant's nature flows from another question: if God is good, why do such fearful creatures exist?  And of course, it's because some other, a source of evil, created them.  And that's what makes me doubt the tarantula story -- Ungoliant exists as a well thought out piece of world building.  Also, uh, JJR himself noted that he did it to scare his son -- and that he actually dislikes the Tarzan books more than spiders.

Wow. I didn't remember those celebrity voices. According to Wikipedia, Mr. Cow (and may I just say "ha!" at that?) is Frank Nelson, Mr. Fox is Peter Lorre, Mr. Turtle is Ralph James, and Mr. Owl was comedian/ventriloquist Paul Winchell. (And the boy is Jodie Foster's older brother Buddy.)

That's a joke that's been around for a while. I seem to recall a short story published in one of the SF magazines in the 1980s about an inventor who created a time machine, but it would only transport its users to a particular NYC street corner in the 1940s... and the punchline was that his wife ended up using it to buy from the butcher shop located there.

It isn't exactly rare... I've added this particular example to Time Travel for Fun and Profit on All The Tropes.
