[RFC] Curses!

Well, I've lost my laptop.  And along with it chapter 6 and chapter 7 of DSKS.
The good news is that I was backing up the folder to an SD Card.  That bad news is that at some point in time it started giving me some weird error - probably because the card was starting to go bad.  So I only have chapters 1 through 5.
I may get my laptop back, but it could take up to a year to happen.  Until then, I've taken the precaution of purchasing a new laptop.  It's a nice little thing, too.  Toshiba Satellite A665D series, with AMD Phenom triple core processor at 2.2 GHz and 1.5 MB of L2 Cache, 4 GB of DDR3 Memory, and an ATI Mobility Radeon with a dedicated 1 GB of DDR3 Memory.  I may not have my missing material back, but it's nice to have a computer again.

You might want to try chkdisk, since you're on Windows. I've lost fic on an SD card and to a dying HDD.(Which is why I post WIP stuff to a couple of forums, along with feedback). I was actually able to get some things back of the SD card, since only the File allocation data had been corrupted. The files themselves were still there.

If it's a FAT32 card, chances are it's just part of the allocation table or similar describing where on the disk the files actually are, that's gone down.

If chkdisk doesn't work... there's also Photorec... which reads the raw data on the disk to recover stuff.

Oh, I got the files. the problem was that the newer stuff never got backed up because of the error.

So... since all my good stuff is on the other laptop... I've decided to go ahead and take a shot at rewriting DSKS.

One major change that I'm going to try out is writing everything in third person, so there won't be any jarring shifts from one character's POV to another... though personally I think it strips something from the story - that particular character's 'flavor' of context. We'll see, though.

Are there any highlights that anyone feels are too good to let go?
EDIT: If you want to find the chapters I've posted here on the forums, just hit the tag 'dskswdyhms' and look for the draft chapter topics.

Here's a little food for thought:You can save (a copy of) your in-progress work on-line.
I'm not sure how practical it is while you're underway, but Windows Live Sync Mesh is a pretty good solution if you're regularly online. It's capped at 5GB total sync'd storage, but it works awesome.
You just point Mesh at a folder, and anytime something is added, removed, or changed, Mesh copies the changes to the cloud. With text/code files is pretty much transparent.

if you want a platform agnostic solution there is dropbox (http://www.dropbox.com/).

You only get 2GB for free (you can pay for more), but they have software for mac/pc/linux/iphone/blackberry/android/etc.

Connectivity is an issue for me at this time. My shipboard account has been locked up, so I only have internet access as long as we're in range of SoftBank's cell towers. A local back-up solution is the only feasible one for me. I'll just try again with a newer chip.
