Songs Not to Play Redux
06-14-2005, 01:16 AM
The Talking Heads' (Nothing but) Flowers. (lyrics)
At first glance, the song looks like it could be useful. However, Doug's smart enough to see the problem with it... ( It's in the FAQ.)
So, somebody plays the song where Doug hears it, and suddenly everyone's standing around buck-naked, covered in flowers, in a field of flowers. Silverbolt wouldn't care, but everyone else would be at least annoyed. And Doug would need a replacement helmet - hope he had the entire memory backed up somewhere.
Of course, there's the question of how the song's going to be played back, since (unless it's a really loud sound system off in the distance) the first thing to be transmuted is likely to be the playback mechanism...
Hmmmmm... Maybe we'd better not show this post to any of Warrior's World wealthier villains.

It's spelt "Frodo Baggins" but it's pronounced "Throat-wobbler Mangrove."

Actually I do see a use for it -but yes Doug's gonna want a new helmet - for when it's Kobayashi Maru time in a nanotech 'Grey Goo Apocalypse' event.
Wipe that annoying cloud of disintegration away. Wonder how it would zonk the Borg?

If we run it literally as described... it won't be pretty, even with all the flowers around.

I had a thought earlier today as to how this could be a useful effect:
Step 1: Arrive on scene where powersuited individual is rampaging.
Step 2: Play "I'll Play For You", aimed at said individual.
Step 3: Play "(Nothing but) Flowers"
Step 4: Easily apprehend now-naked no-longer-powersuited individual. Apologize to police for destroying evidence.

application

Well, for a powersuiter, he's got "dust in the wind". The only case where he'd need "flowers" is if he didn't have time to aim, or wanted to be sure to hit the tech and absolutely nothing else. Or, you know, he wanted a bunch of flowers.
Also, in terms of "what it takes" - doug's power requires an instrumental? So purely choral pieces, even large, involved choral pieces wouldn't do? What about vocal/body percussion or other a capella tricks?
(just having an image of Doug, having lost his helmet, descending into the depths, accompanied by one of the many, many anime musician types.)
Also, I can't help but think that there'd be some pretty amazing synergies between Doug and a spellsinger-type.
Is there a power for "Eye of the Tiger"? There ought to be.

Yup. Its an early one, so it doesnt mesh quite as well as some of the others.

It is, in fact, the very first song I/he used in-game, which is to say, ever. So yeah, it can be forgiven for not actually following my later rules about song effects too closely.
