borderlands (we need more guns!)
12-01-2009, 10:17 AM
So as an early x-mass gift, my friends gave me a slot in a borderlands 4-pack.
I'm sure other people have made the same comparison, but "FPS Diablo" is such a good fit.
It's a very fun and addictive game, I'm only level 24 on my first time through (sniper first, then I'll try some of the melee oriented characters).
I can easily see this being something I'll be spending time on for quite some time to come.
The flavor text is lots of fun: Having problems hitting your foes? you don't need better aim, just fire more bullets

Awesome game. I've played 1st playthrough with Sniper and Soldier, and have worked my way a good chunk into my Playthrough 2 on both. I've also started
a Brick (but haven't played him much) and gotten to about 25 on a Siren.
Some hints from me:
1) It's tempting to keep one of each weapon type. Don't. On a sniper, for example, keep 1 sniper rifle, 1 revolver, and one repeater pistol (I prefer
bullet-hose variants of the repeaters) and 1-2 other weapons just in case. On your second playthrough, when you have inventory space to burn, then it's not
a bad idea.
2) Your class skills tell you what weapons to specialize in. For example, on a soldier, it's pretty blatantly clear you should be focusing on Combat Rifles
first, Shotguns second, and everything else third. On a siren, SMGs. On a Sniper, Sniper Rifles, Revolvers, and Pistols. On a Brick, well, FISTS.
3) It's tempting to look at damage numbers only, and forget the elementals. Bad idea. Especially on the Fire/Shock/Corrosive weapons, a less powerful
weapon with a 'Very High Elemental Effect' chance, even if it's only x1, will do *much* more damage. It might take marginally longer.
Can't say enough great things about this game.

I'm soloing the game- Level 30-ish Sniper right now, and I'm not nearly done.
I carry 2 sniper rifles, two revolvers, and a rocket launcher.
Further hints:
-Anything with ammo regeneration is your friend, and should be kept close to you for a very, very long time. I have a revolver that regens ammo, so I use a
powerful corrosive revolver for combat, and then switch to it to regen the bullets I fired.
-Corrosive and explosive weapons are the absolute best to have. Explosives do more damage right off, and corrosive does the damage over time. Fire is like a
less effective corrosive most of the time, and shock is kinda meh.
-Get the final skill in the sniper's Sniper skills tree up to 5 ASAP. The extra damage per bullet is easy to ignore, but 100% chance to IGNORE SHIELDS is
almost game-breakingly good. It tends to make damage over time less effective, since the extra damage doesn't penetrate the shield, but so what?

I've boiled down to sniper, combat rifle, and smg equiped, with a rocket launcher in the inventory for those pesky turrets.
If I had thought about it I would have stuck to sniper, revolver, and repeater, but those didn't kill things fast enough from far enough away in the
beginning.

Dito, fire and shock are wonderful things. Fire cause it does Damage over time (and makes them run around on fire, not shooting you).
Shock b/c it takes care of shields.
Since the three platforms (steam/xbox live/playstation live) are only networkable with themselves, it might be a good idea to to keep track of who is on what.
I'm on steam.

... this is too damn tempting, guys. Unfortunately, I don't have the funds (and won't anytime soon) to join in. Unless Steam offers a Christmas
special of some sort
If anyone wants to add me to their Steam list, I'm "sofaspud_prime" there. I'm mostly Orange Boxing it lately... still waiting for funds to
regen enough to get Left 4 Dead (or now, Borderlands, sounds like).

I think most of us are Steam users.....but I shouldn't really be getting into a new game ATM! as I've still got many games to complete, or play through
again, to just start a new one. Like Forza, ODST, GTA4, Fallout 3.....some for the game, some for the bip-bloop (inset xbox achievement sound here) and for the
props of Gamerscore.

Just added Afro Samurai to my ps3 library - I haven't even _opened_ Infamous or Batman:Arkham Asylum yet..
but sure, I'll pick up borderlands. because the box art is that freaking droolworthy.

Interestingly enough, the box art for Borderlands is composed mostly of in-game footage.

Feh. Cross-platform networkable games have been around for years, why don't these people do it?
I got the PS3 version, since steam is probably a non-option and it sounds like at least one other person here will have that one. Although I don't know when I might play it either.

I could see them making it cross platform xbox/pc. Microsoft already has something to that affect with their 'games for windows live', or whatever
it's called.
But unless the company wants to host the game on their own servers, getting the PS3 and Xbox360 to play nicely is never going to happen.
It would be a two fold mess. First they would have to get xbox live to talk to playstation online, and that would be no easy feat.
Then they would have to somehow link their communities (so when your playing on your Xbox, you can find out that Joe on his Playstation has started to play as
well)
The only way they are going to spend the man hours on such a project would be if it made them money. But it would do the opposite. Both platforms greatly
benefit from the network effect (you yourself said your going to pick it up for the PS3 because you know someone else has it as well).
While linking the two networks would be a good thing for gamers, it would compromise a serious source of clout for both platforms, and I just don't see how
they would go for that.
