[Poll] Bad Joke?
01-11-2011, 01:30 AM
I seem to have polarized a good number of my friends with a joke I made. Some of them like it, and others want to decorate a pike with my head. Since people around here enjoy a good pun (or, perhaps more appropriately, a bad pun) I wanted to gauge reactions here.
Yesterday, one of my roommates and I were at Barnes & Noble, he to browse and me to pick up two Dresden Files books. Having completed my objective (but, sadly, without finding a copy of Changes) we made our way to the counter, which is directly across from the sprawling Nook display. I turned to my roommate.
"Hey."
"Hmm?"
I gestured to the Nooks and, with the cheesiest grin I could make, said, "Nyuk nyuk nyuk!"
I'm pretty sure the only things that stopped him from throttling me was that we were in public and I was his ride.
So: Yay? Nay?

The B&N e-book reader and a reference to the Three Stooges...
I must have missed something.
BTW: Isn't B&N going out of business?

The B&N e-book reader is called the 'nook', which with a little permutation could be 'nyuk'

The joke is good.
But I really like heads on pikes.

I dunno. It's a joke. It's an awful awful pun. It's the sort of thing that solicits a groan more than a gut-wrenching laugh. But I think it's still the sort of pun worth making.
At the same time, I can't see why it's much of a sticking point. Jokes like these are...jokes of the moment. Once the moment's gone, what does it matter? If people laughed, sure. If they taught it was awful, sure. Beyond that? Forget about it, move on to the next gag.

I don't think it's a bad joke. It's worth a chuckle. I think the problem wasn't the joke, though, but that you were making it. Probably wouldn't have garnered such a reaction if it was some random schmuck in the crowd doing so, but I don't think your friend expected it of you. From there it's just a matter of a guy standing his ground.

Sorry, buddy. Zero Tolerance policy on puns and I've got this pike just sitting around doing nothing.

If you become a monster to put down a monster you've still got a monster running around at the end of the day and have as such not really solved the whole monster problem at all.
Heh... A pike pining for a head....

I voted "meh" because "nyuk" and "nook" aren't similar enough to make a good pun.

And general consensus is Meh. Although a suspicious number of people want me to pull a John Morden.
Thanks for the input, people.
