I came across this article and thought it might be of interest - 21 tricks for remembering spelings.  I know there is a writing tips article or thread somewhere, but I didn't find it after a quick look so I started a new thread.  Feel free to move somewhere else if appropriate.

I always go by this simple rule for "lose vs. loose": whichever spelling you see online is the wrong one.  For example:
Quote: Cry havock!  And let lose the dogs of war
As you can see, this is completely wrong.
