Things I wonder: HP fanfic conventions
09-01-2005, 11:25 PM
Feel free to add your own.
1) Why does everyone describe the background character Susan Bones as built like a heavily-enhanced porn star?
2) Why do people always show Dumbledore's eyes twinkling constantly?
3) Once again, exactly when did Fem!Blaise become a fic tag?--

Huh. I don't think I've ever noticed that. Where have you seen it? Quote: 2) Why do people always show Dumbledore's eyes twinkling constantly?
Because they're confusing him with Santa Claus? Anyway, in the wake of the latest book, I suspect that the rate of twinkling incidence is going to drop precipitously. Quote: 3) Once again, exactly when did Fem!Blaise become a fic tag?
When JKR finally declared Blaise to be a guy in canon, and people decided that they liked having a female Slytherin of unspecified loyalties to toy with anyway

1) Meh. Wandering around HP fanfic sites. Whenever they talk about Ginny or Hermione, they're reasonable. The moment Susan Bones (or to a lesser extent, Lavender Brown)comes into the picture, words like "large" "impressive" "stupendous" start coming into the picture. Sheesh.
2) Well, yes.
3) But doesn't Daphne Greengrass work for that? --

3) Yes, but most people who read/write HP fics involving female Slyths for some reason always go "But ... but it's Blaise! I mean ... Blaise! How can that name not make you hott?"

Going, going... gone!!
Really, when it comes to fandom (HP in particular) rationality is a term that usually doesn't even exist. Especially for the shippers.

(sarcasm)Hey its perfectly possible... I mean Harry/Draco is totally believable as long as they can write it well (/sarcasm)
makes Harry/Minerva sound plausible by comparison huh?
quick think! whats the most implausible ship you can come up with... don't bother with harry/voldie since it has already been written _____________________________

Yeah, you'd think so, wouldn't you? Of course, most people would put this right up there with Harry/Fawkes. And I've SEEN the Harry/Fawkes relationship.....

Actually, I've seen Harry/Min. She took a youth potion and 'infiltrated' the Golden Trio posing as an exchange student - I beleive as a y6 fic where Harry no longer trusted Dumbledore at all, and D wanted her to keep an eye on his security. But, you know, decades of life experience can't stand against teenage hormones, (and memories aside the endocrine system has a large effect on our thought petterns even IRL) and gosh, he's just so darn cute...
... yeah. It was actually fairly plausible, if you accept the starting assumptions that such a potion exists and she'd be willing to do anything of the sort.

It was on FFn, so the character filters might catch it for you. Then again, it's FFn, so who knows if anything will quite work like they say it will.

Edit: Relatively extensive searching there and via google gives no joy. Le sigh... if the smartypants hadn't changed their URL scheme three times in the last six months it would probably be possible to find it in the old reccomendations threads, or a profile that linked to it in the 'favorite stories' section, since I'm quite sure that's how I found it to begin with - that's about the only way I head into FFn these days. What, you think Samuel L. Jackson isn't going to survive the zombie apocalypse?

Ah, that's the one! (The de-aging potion) I kept misspelling McGonagall from the looks of things.

Since when did it become standard practice when making harry an animagus to decide that he would want to turn into a phoenix >_<

Actually, JK stated in an interview that the person becoming an animagus didn't have a choice as to the animal they became. *Shrug*-- This message brought to you by Ely Lilly, makers of SeraFem: Happy Pills for PMS.

Huh. Rocky start, but not bad, not bad at all. Went for the hard, heartbreaker ending, too, rather than the "de-aging potion + basilisk poison + unicorn tree cure = permanent youth" I was expecting. Double points for that.
I think I'll put this on my favorites list.
