Disappearing Fic?
Disappearing Fic?
#1
Okay, this is a little weirdness that happened to me on Sunday; I've been meaning to write about it for two days but I kept forgetting...
Sunday morning I was on Twisting the Hellmouth; on the New Updates page I came across a Ranma/Stargate SG-1 crossover in which Ranma apparently fell into the pool of drowned Replicator Queen, and by the time he gets to the Tendos he has drones all over Europe and Asia that are fighting crime and rescuing people from fires and all kinds of disturbingly non-replicatorish behavior.
I was a few chapters in when we had some kind of power glitch that locked my system.  I had to reboot, but when I got back to TTH to continue reading, the fic had apparently disappeared.  I could not find it on the Updates page any more (and no, it wasn't at the very bottom where it would scroll off), and attempts to search for it failed.  I know I wasn't imaginging this, so I must be screwing up somewhere.  So I'm hoping someone here knows the fic I'm describing and has a bookmark.  Help, please?

Bob,

The fic was called Photocopy, by Aerie and was up to chapter 7 as of August 23rd however the link http://www.tthfanfic.org/...17-2/aerie+Photocopy.htm is now pointing to a rather strange HP
fic by Sithicus. There's a link at the top of the sites pages stating there was some kind of Database screw up on TTH so it may be gone until Aerie
re-uploads it.

Oh ho! I did a little more digging and there is the exact same fic on FFN http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4112755/1/Photocopy by NKVD
except it was origonally posted in March of '08 and is currently up to chapter 12; so its looking like a case of CPD: Copy Paste Disease.

And now I'm not so enthusiastic. I think it jumped the shark about the time it went megacrossover with the appearance of the Enterprise literally out of
nowhere. When the focus left Ranma/ranmareps entirely to switch to a massive space battle, I decided I'd had enough. It wasn't the story I thought I
was getting.

I stopped reading the moment the author decided to character bash Akane.

I'm glad I was not wrong in this case.

I mean, seriously, this version of Akane has no reaosn to dislike Ranma at all...

it was a different enough concept from the normal that I was willing to overlook the rather blatant power-up this brought, but bailed on it when Akane whipped
out the pervert stereotype with absolutely no founding.

Eh, it's early for Akane to have a mysteriously appearing mallet, and manipulation is more Nabiki's style than pleading, but the non-divergence point
characterization seems pretty solid for the most part. That's not to say it rates more than a three on the Ficter Scale, and the needle doesn't even
twitch on my Awsomometer. Mildly discommended.

I agree, I skimmed through up to chapter 10, then had to stop. I suspect that the writer's source of Ranma background comes entirely from fandom
fanfiction.

It looked so good for the first few chapters... such a pity it took such a nosedive so quickly.

I liked the idea, and I thought that the implementation was interesting and different enough to merit reading further. As for writing quality, I'm a bit
more generous on that than I used to be, after finding several authors with very primitive writing skills yet good story ideas and plots. I'm inclined to
give the benefit of the doubt to someone who doesn't quite seem to know what they're doing, more than I used to at least.

Just my thoughts on Ranma in general - I'm not even nit-picking at the characters themselves...

From what I've seen of Ranma 1/2, the status quo is too well pretty well maintained - I didn't see any real changes from seasons
one-through-four aside from the addition of a few new characters. With so little development going on and each season seeming more like a long and drawn out
episode, I gave up on sitting through Ranma 1/2 at season four.

That said, I'm going to be on the lookout for a good Ranma Database/Wiki. I've seen enough that I feel I can get the characters right without having
to sit through all of... How many seasons were there?

*Shudders at the thought of having to sit through so much mind-numbing anime*

Actually, Peg and I watched the whole of the Ranma anime a couple years back -- we found a place that was selling what I suspect now are pirate collections of the dubs and bought the entire series plus OVAs and movies for just under $200. Then we sat down and spent several weeks working our way through them. There's a definite dip in quality around the second season -- I can remember one episode where the art was so bad that Genma and Ranma looked like twins -- but the later stuff (even given the filler eps they put in) isn't bad. I would hardly call it mind-numbing. And it's worth watching, if only because of the surprises that blow fanon completely out of the water. For instance, despite many fics to the contrary, Nabiki has far more conservative taste in swimwear than Kasumi; in a beach episode near the end of the series, Kasumi wore the second tiniest bikini in the entire show (exceeded only by Kodachi's).

Ah. Just for the record... BOGGLE! (O_o)

I'll have to see if I can start downloading it again then. If anything, it will be something for me to watch later on. Later in the year, we will be
getting two more 5" Gun Techs, bringing the gun crew I'm in up to full manning (at last). That should spread out the workload enough to give me a lot
more time to work with.

She also wins a beach beauty contest she wasn't even entered in, where the contestants included the rest of the female cast members. (Kasumi apparently has no idea that she's freakin' gorgeous.)

Another of the later episodes has one of my favorite lines in all of Ranma: Again, Kasumi: "Nabiki, you're frightening the ghost."

My personal favorite line from Ranma will always be: "If only I weren't so hungry, I could figure out what to do with all this food."

I still have a .wav file somewhere, from when I was using it as my "new mail" sound, of Kasumi saying "Oh my. I think I'm going to do
something EVIL now."

I kind of suspect that some things proliferate simply because there's so damn *much* of the series that it's hard to remember all the details even if you've had the chance to watch it all.

(Could also be manga/anime differences in some cases. I don't really remember a beach scene like that in the manga. Admittedly, it's been long enough since I read the manga that I'm not to be relied upon.)

Still, the "status quo" thing seems to be pretty accurate. I'd actually say it's the driving force behind a lot of Ranma 1/2 fanfic - to show the characters in a situation that actually changes.

Actually, I think the swimsuit thing comes from the second Ranma movie, where Kasumi's wearing a one-piece if I remember right, and Nabiki's wearing a
quarter of a handkerchief held together by either chain or string.

The weird thing about Kasumi is that her character tends to basically disappear in fanfics. She is there... but isn't all there. Multiple interpertations
of that line are on purpose. For instance, I think their is a case to be made that Kasumi is constantly and actively sabatoging Akane and Ranma as a couple.
Throwing in the obligitory lines from the first day, paraphrased as, 'I like older men, ditch him on Akane' and 'Akane is a nice girl... she is
just a violent maniac' lines... lets add in that it takes little effort to have her sending Akane and Ranma up to the same bath at the same time. Granted
she probablely didn't know about the curse before Genma told Soun... If I wanted to be really paranoid I'd point out Tofu apparently has at least one
book that mentions Jusenkyo... and that Kasumi is known to borrow books from Tofu, not that his weird lust haze lets him know what books he lends out. Friend
Computer level paranioa says that book Kasumi gives to Akane to pass back Tofu in episode 3 is that book with info on Jusenkyo.

I note one of the things that is almost completely left out of fanfiction is that one of the main reasons Akane and Ranma can't get anywhere in a
relationship is that if they try anything at the Tendo's place there is a stack of family members literally with their ears to the door/wall... and Kasumi
is on top of the stack.

I also remember a sceen in the Tendo's backyard in which Kuno is KOed by a small mallet to the temple by Nabiki... after Kasumi hands said mallet to
Nabiki. On screen no less. So this means Kasumi is a keeper of mallets... then I think of the Hinako courts Soun arc... and that Ranma got a Ranma sized
giant wooden sledge mallet from somewhere to clock Soun with. The simplest solution is from Kasumi's stockpile. This was also a case where Kasumi and
Ranma's goal were the same.

Actually, now I'm wondering if its literally true every major relationship building moment between Akane and Ranma happened at least a block away from
Kasumi.

Add in that, roughly a decade ago, there use to be a case where there was literally one writer of fanfics who was famous for being the only one to hate Kasumi
and how she gets away with everything and everyone apparently loves her and she is winning contests she isn't involved in... I have to ask if Kasumi is a
Mary Sue who can keep her head down.

I'm going to stop before I end up with a chromatic access level now.

Oh, it's too late for that, Citizen. High Programmer Kas-U-MII would like to have a word with you in Debriefing Chamber 101-A; please keep in mind that
the terawatt pulse lasers are, as always, a mere formality and cannot possibly accidentally vaporize your entire clone
series... Smile

Kasumi's also the one who hands Akane the barbell to throw at Ryouga when he first shows up, instead of (IIRC) the shoe she was going to throw...

Ranma The Abridged Series wonderfully alters her line to "You can't kill someone with a bamboo sword, Akane -- here, use this barbell."

I remember that one time I was going through a Ranma 1/2 volume at Borders, and on a whim, I decided to make a note of the next point where I saw a mallet.
Turned out to be one that Kasumi and Nabiki handed to Akane, telling her to use it on Ranma if he tried anything while they were alone together. Don't
remember what volume it was.
