Recommend me some anime, please...
11-07-2007, 04:12 AM
I'm at the point where I'm only picking up a few anime series on DVD: Zipang (one disc left), Hare & Guu Deluxe (one disc left), Ah My Goddess (two discs left), and Zegapain (just started). Lucky Star doesn't start its R1 DVD release until next year. but that'll go on the list when it does.
I'm also only downloading three series: Denno Coil (six eps left), Oh! Edo Rocket (six eps left, but appears to be stalled), and You're Under Arrest Full Throttle (just starting). Yes, I intend to buy them all on R1 DVD when or if they become available; I wouldn't be downloading them otherwise. (I've already bought the Oh! Edo Rocket soundtrack CD.)
That's a pretty sparse list for a maniacu...
Given that, my posting history here, and my current 20 favourite anime list, what do people think I might like that I might not have seen? They don't need to be new shows; I know I haven't seen all the good anime that's out there, despite how much I have seen.

I'm not sure what you have seen or not, so I'm going to take wild shots
Wedding Peach(It's a magical girl series in the same vein as Sailor Moon, with the exception that the Ai-tenshi are more competent)
Guyver(this I know you haven't seen. It's sort of a dark superhero anime. There's a one shot, a 12 episode OVA series, and a 26 episode TV series)

The recent TV series is the best of the Guyver bunch. The others mostly aren't worth the time it would take to watch, let alone find.

I'm old enough to have seen (at least some of) the first Guyver anime when it first came out on North American VHS. I have to agree with you on that vintage's quality... The new one's better, then?
Is Wedding Peach as repetitive as Sailor Moon was? (That was the biggest problem I had with Sailor Moon - the plot just dragged on and on, and any character development in one episode was ignored in the rest of the series.)

While early in its run, so far Gundam 00 is like almost every other member of the Gundam franchise, only better animated and about ten times as smart. While the reasons behind warfare haven't gotten any examination yet, some of the problems with ending it, particularly unilaterally as the show's premise involves, are already quite central - and several of the characters are more than a bit likable.
Seirei no Moribito is, AFAIK, not yet licensed for English-language release anywhere, but it is, by far, the coolest period (fantasy) anime I've ever seen or even heard of. The animation is lovely, even the antagonistic characters are likeable, and the fight scenes are fucking brilliant.
Heroic Age is Epic Space Opera. No, really, it's EPIC SPACE OPERA. Completely seriously and straight-faced. With kaiju. Yet it's not histrionic, and it works. And one of the epilogue scenes in the last episode made me laugh for five minutes solid.
If you're not already following the Nanoha franchise, then you should be.
Blue Drop is also currently running, but looks incredibly promising, tho granted shojo-ai is an instant sell with me.
Night Wizard is another series of the moment. It rocks my socks, being simultaneously funny and serious and immensely cool.

Oh yes. Better animation (of course), a plot nicely reworked by Takaya himself (Lisker gets to stick around for a while, for one thing), and it goes all the way up through the Kronos conquest to the debut of the Guyver Gigantic. The scanslation is kinda spotty, but if you already have half a clue what's going on it works anyway.
I really do wish Takaya would write the manga faster. There's not quite enough post-Gigantic material for a second season yet.

I'll second Gundam 00 as I'm enjoying it immensely thus far.
Other recs:
The new Kanon series is a lot of fun and has some of the most astounding animation I've yet seen in a TV series. (If you look for it, it is sometimes listed under Kanon 2006.)
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni for some sweet psychological/supernatural horror. Don't let the character art fool you; it's violent, bloody and awesome. R1 DVDs of the first season are available, though I don't know how many.
Black Lagoon; seriously sweet action.
Darker than Black is interesting; it has an overarching plot, but until the last three episodes it is divided into a series of arcs each two episodes long. Fun, intelligent and thought provoking.
Potemayo for some good humor.*********

Early on, it looks like it, but it is laying groundwork and things do change quite a bit from the start by the end of the first season(Jama-P being the first major change). When the second season starts up, things proceed at a high pace to the climax and end. Salavia, Viento, and other fun stuff.
27 episodes in Season 1
24 episodes in Season 2
There is one blip in the first season dealing with Yosuke, but it does come into play in later.--------------------

Tegnen Toppa Gurren-Lagann
I am not sure if its on disk from anywhere, but this show is one of my all time favorites.
Also, Gainax's previous work Gunbuster 2 is also awesome, in the same way a good crack! fic is.
Older ones:
Scryed is good, so is Full metal Panic

Gall Force: Eternal Story (aka first movie)
The others suck but the first movie is great. In fact it's still one of my all time favorites.
El Hazard
Again a show where the first OVA is good the followups not so much. Though based on some of the animes you like there is a chance that you are one of the few who would like the TV series.
Also El Hazard is unique in that there is a good dub for it.
Magical Knight Rayheart
I can only recommend the first season again, but that's because I haven't seen the second season yet.
I second some of the recommendations made by others (Nanoha, Scryed, FMP, etc)
If you have seen a lot of the old anime you will like Project A-ko.
Based on your top 20 I'm hesitant to recommend Record of Lodoss war but you might like it.
Something that I doubt you will like based on your list but throwing it out there for other people who look at the recommendations: Gunslinger Girl. It's extremely depressive, yet in a weird way also somewhat upbeat (which serves mainly to make it more depressive).
There are some other I want to recommend but I can't remember them of the top of my head.
E: "Did they... did they just endorse the combination of the JSDF and US Army by showing them as two lesbian lolicons moving in together and holding hands and talking about how 'intimate' they were?"
B: "Have you forgotten so soon? They're phasing out Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

I really should update that list of what anime I own... Gall Force, El Hazard, Project A-ko, and the first season of Rayearth are all in my collection already.
Good call on my preferences, though.
I suspect I'll track down a copy of FMP next. Thanks, all! (Although you can keep the recommendations coming... )

Some that have been recommended by people I know:
Seirei no Moribito: Apparently absolutely beautiful animation but slow moving plot. Japanese fantasy world kinda deal.
Ghost Hound: Esoteric mystery dealing with dreams and out-of-body experiences, good productions values. Director of Lain + Masumune Shirow.
Tegen Toppa Gurren Lagann: Over the top mecha action show, And by over the top I mean "character's punch the universe so hard it reconfigures into a more satisfactory arrangement" over-the-top. It's been getting rave reviews. Developed by Gainax.
Ouran High host Club: An anime about young pretty-boys in a club training them to become young gigolos. Apparently much funnier then it sounds and mainly plays off of romance comedy tropes.
Welcome to the N.H.K.: Darkish and a little depressing. May not be for you but I've heard a lot of good things about it if anyone else is going to check it out.

Seriously I cant rec Lagann enough.
It starts a little slow, but piles on the acceleration till after a while its like watching a train of awesome slam into a mountain of win.
If you can make it to I think its episodes 4 and 9 it really sets itself on the road to being truly epic.

Steel Angel Kurumi might be something you'll like.
Re: Cutey Honey is a fun little group of four OVA's and one live action movie. I have no idea what is going on with the current live action Cutey Honey television series though.
Early on, it is fairly weak but Powerpuff Girls Zeta does pick up after the first thirteen episodes. The Rabu Rabu Beam dance episode was hillarious.

Liked it enough to buy the box set...

Hmmmmm... I liked "New Cutey Honey", so this is a definite possibility.

Second on that. Major goodness there. Steel Angel Kurumi 2 not as good, but still fun to watch. But if you come across Steel Angel Kurumi 0, skip it. Completely unlike the other two in tone and setting. It may be the fault of the fansub I saw, but I found it tedious and grey.-- Bob

Having just started watching Gurren-Lagann, I'm adding a hearty HELL YES to the recs.
Giant robots, Big Damn Heroes, Japanese machismo all over the place, giant robots with cool shades, and a Lensman Arms Race whose ultimate culmination would make the All-Highest of Eddore void his vacuoles in sheer terror (and then order one built for himself).

Given some of the anime on your list, I think you'd like Last Exile.
It's a Gonzo story about a boy pilot who finds himself in a war for the fate of the world.
Very pretty, very cool.
