Edit: New CPU problems
04-16-2008, 08:18 PM
The new Intel Core 2 Duo Wolfdale-cored 3.0ghz got in stock at Newegg earlier this week, and I couldn't resist. This little beast should be hitting my
front door this evening, and will replace my 2.4ghz Allendale core 2 duo.
I wish there was a compelling video card upgrade past the 8800 GTS, but alas..

But, Bob, you can write fanfics perfectly well on a 386 with a monochrome CRT...

I have a copy of Wordstar on an 8087 (yes, 7 - it has a math coprocessor) machine out at my dad's house.. it worked, too, when we fired it up last.. in
'98!

What do you mean, there's no compelling video card upgrade past the 8800 GTS? The GTX is markedly better, the Ultra still better, and the 9800s better
still!
(I mostly say this because I'll probable have a 9800 GX2 to replace my 6600 GTs by mid-May...)

640mb GTS vs 512mb 9800 GTX does not compel me - I also can't find an apples/apples comparison between the two.
HardOCP has noted that 8800 GTX vs. 9800 GTX is also a letdown. In some circumstances, the 9800 is a lesser card.
The 9 series seems to be a bit of a letdown, when all's said and done.
Also, with an 8800 GTS - I'm not exactly _hurting_, so I'm willing to wait another generation.

For a little Shadenfreude for those with envy - CoH is crashy now ; )
I'm currently running Winamp, Mozilla, Sisoft Sandra in OMG HURT THE COMPY mode, prime95 dual core setup, as well as two other CPU stress testing proggies
- and Winamp vis and a proggy called 'video card stability test'
To my machine's credit, it's still usable.

Interesting. If the only thing changed is your CPU and it now crashes, your CPU is likely faulty.

Logic agrees.
However, I slammed the CPU last night - held both cores at 100% utilization with Prime95, and cranked in a CPU/Multimedia stressor too.
No problems.
But - I _did_ get a lockup on a non-CoH program, a video card stress test.
Tonight, I'm getting a new power supply and seeing what happens. In BIOS, some of my voltages were out-of-bounds, so...
And the CPU wasn't the only thing that changed - I had to upgrade the BIOS to support the new chip.

I've had lockups & BSoDs with my rig. I just thought it was heat or bios issues. Nope, just fried DDR 2 ram. The bios read the EPP data wrong and
overvolted it.
As for any heat issues, a different vga cooler, some new fans and a sheet of foamboard with some velcro has sure done the job.
However, down here atm that processor is pure unobtainium. Although I could get a E6850 if I wanted to, it might get interesting if a bios update's
required. The floppy's playing up and the inbuilt bios update won't grab the bin from a thumbstick, for some reason, anymore.

I got mine with an auto-order via Newegg, I don't know if they'll ship to .Aus.. Aus PC market, as tirelessly championed by Dan, may carry or allow you to setup a notify for this chip.
the most irritating part? While it runs, this thing is a BEAST. Noticeable performance increase, on an already high-performance machine.
I might also take this opportunity to do a new Windows build, I have a spare disk..

Loveliness ensues - I have Memtest86+ on another partition, bootable, and it claims I have big nasty holes in my memory.
I have a pair of 2gb chunks of DDR2 1066, to replace my 2x 1gb DDR 800, but..

I recently replaced my dual 7800GTs with a 8800GTS 512M (G92 chip). It may be a double-thick card, but DAMN it is quiet. CoH is consistently pegging it's
framerate at 60Hz now (vsync is on) and I can barely hear the video card spin up. Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, CoD4, nothing.
It's also a joy not havign to deal with the mess that is SLI anymore.

I've got the older GTS - the G80 version. I've got 640 megs of ram, but you've got a few more pixel pipelines or something.
either way, incredible card. Now hopefully my memory will get in soon, and actually be the problem..

Well, if Memtest is giving you errors, that isn't to say that it is telling you that your RAM sticks are necessarily bad . Having a pair that you know
(New, hope they are) in good order, it might help you with elimination, though. I can hope you get your stuff fixed soon.
--Tangent?--
As for me, after 13 passes of Memtest, it has yet to find an error, but it is somewhat hard to ignore the gaping "HARDWARE MALFUNCTION: MEMORY PARITY
ERROR. THE SYSTEM HAS HALTED." screen I get more than often enough. I'm leaning now to Overheating, or software problems.
Regardless, I hope these issues well be sorted out for the both of us.

Have you tried re-seating the ram?
Oh, if you get what look like intermittent memory issues after a new cpu, I had a similar issue after my last upgrade.
Turned out my old power supply was insufficient and I had to upgrade, that solved the problems.

I'm using a brand new 850 watt power supply, upgraded from the 650 I was using - and I have tried the ram in all possible slots and combinations, as well
as singles.
I have another batch of RAM coming, we'll see what happens tonight.
