Turned out it wasn't a consulting firm but a recruiting agency -- although from their website you wouldn't be able to tell that. No big -- this was the first headhunter to treat me the way I got used to being treated by headhunters in the 80s -- and which even my mainstay from that period hadn't been doing for me. I like this place, and I like the guy I spoke with. With the way things are going, dunno if I'll still be in the market long enough to make the best use of them, though.
Meanwhile, the other recruiters apparently got their wires crossed. If I'm interpreting their last email to me correctly, the position they were telling me about is the one they already tried to submit me for a couple months back. So.. back to square one there.
And I've now got an interview Monday morning with a recruiter whose personal office is in Queens, but is part of a network of offices which cover the tri-state area. I'm not too thrilled about going all the way out to Queens, but if I need to I need to.

I got my first job interview this Friday. It's for an internship position for an industrial hygienist at the VA in Milwaukee. Of course they had to call me when I was in the can.
*sigh*

Good luck!
I was under the weather this morning and rescheduled the appointment. And I got confused -- the Queens outfit isn't a recruiter but a potential employer; I got it mixed up with the other folks.
Oh, and in the middle of the afternoon today I got a call from a place I applied to this morning; I'll be giving a telephone interview tomorrow afternoon.

Just got done with the telephone interview. I'm going on to the next round, which is the tech interview, sometime in the next day or two.
In the mean time, tomorrow I ought to hear back from the local place that -- in reviewing the thread a moment ago -- I just realized that I never let folks know that I went back to a second interview for after attending the open house. That was two weeks ago tomorrow -- and during it the interviewer told me outright that if I could move to Rochester NY she would have offered me a job on the spot. Bonus -- Kat's brother works for that company, in the same building -- and has submitted employee referrals on my behalf to the HR person doing the hiring, and the IT guy who would be my boss if I were hired. It sounds like a really cool place, and I'm hoping I get good news.

That was 2 weeks ago. So far at the begining of this month:
Applications passed HR screening
1-IH Position @ Navy
1- Enviromental Protection slot @Army
1- IH slot @ CDC
1 -FCIP slot @ VA1 job application @ Los Angeles County
3 (or 4 depending on how you look at it) FCIP slots @ EPA
4 positions @ OSHA
So it's 12/13 applications passed HR Screening.
1 interview for VA this Friday.
Looking good!
BTW, anyone here from Wisconsin? What's it like around there?
edit: 1 more this Monday! Los Angeles County

Is there a reason when the HR folks call me for an interview, they either catch me on the porcelain throne or when I'm sitting down to eat? The last time this happened, I just came out of the shower!

Just got back from my interview. Not going to happen. It was a "hail Mary" application to begin with, and the guy who called me in was hoping I would have experience I didn't put on the resume. Unfortunately I had to disabuse him of this notion. Unfortunately because I really would have liked to work at the place, but I couldn't have winged my way through everything I needed to get up to speed on in order to do the job.
Hope you had better luck with your interview than Id id with mine, Ord.

Stay on target!....Stay on Target!

My interview lasted 52 minutes, 7 seconds over the phone. I believe I made a good impression. I was the first pigeon (their words, not mine) out of the trap. *grin*
Whether it was good enough for a job offer, we will have to see. I spent about 3 hours prepping for it and I was prepared. It helps when you have a crib sheet in front of you when you do answer their questions. They still have other folks they have to interview, so here is hoping.
My game plan right now is to in the words of Ieyasu Tokugawa: "Tighten the cords of my helmet". Keep the momentum going, keep sending out at least 1 resume a day from here on end, so figure 5 resumes a week. Approach each interview like it's a tournament wargame and prep for it. Victory will be achieved by this metric: Job offer accepted: 1 More job offers the better though.
On that note I received an email from a VA in Wisconsin, arranging for an interview! So I got the local one here on Monday, then possibly this one this week. I am getting there!
So for this week:
Applications sent to date: 143
Applications passed HR screening
1-IH Position @ Navy
1- Enviromental Protection slot @Army
1- IH slot @ CDC
2 -TCF slots @ VA1 job application @ Los Angeles County
3 (or 4 depending on how you look at it) FCIP slots @ EPA
4 positions @ OSHA
Interview done: 1
Interviews pending: 2

And I've been interviewing like a dog
05-11-2010, 04:53 AM
Finished the local interview. It's for one of the local county hospitals. Which surprised the heck out of me considering, I placed my application last year. I think I did well enough that the interviewer asked me for a copy of my technical writing.
Tomorrow is the EPA in Washington, D.C. Still no word about the other VA in Michigan.

Is it a good thing if they ask you for samples of your technical writing skill after the interview?
Well, after 3 days of interviews, here are my impressions:
The VA position in Milwaukee and the position at Los Angeles County Hospital are jobs I can do with a minimal training period. The EPA position (exposure assessor) is more on theoretical side. Since I haven't done any mathematical work since college, it's going to be iffy on how fast I can get up to speed.
The LACH job is part of a small shop, but I was told that even if I was selected for the position, I may have to wait until they get funding. Also the commute is going to be a pain and I may have to move closer. Of course, I'll have to move across the country for the other Federal jobs, but those positions are interesting as heck.
So I'll have to see. One job from the Air Force passed muster, so I got all the services covered now.

Thanks Bob!. Let me clarify it a bit further. The organization is actually NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) which falls under the CDC. Still a good thing.

Had a phone interview yesterday afternoon. I got the impression that I was neither the weakest candidate nor the strongest, and the fellow asked me for my availability for a second round interview, which I'm choosing to interpret as a good sign.
