They must be handing out ice-skates in Hell, because the original Dirty Pair TV series has finally been licensed after all these decades.

(No, not "Flash", or the movies. or the OAVs - those have been available for nearly forever. This is the original TV series.

Licensed by Right Stuf, so it's a sub-only release... but we're used to that from watching our grainy nth-generation VHS fansubs, right?

What, before it's actually released? You might want to wait until the end of the year instead, and buy a copy...

Although I have to wonder what the illustrator was smoking to come up with that concept for the Lovely Angels...

Could be worse. Looks like the artist is trying to go for a classic look, after a fashion.

The chances of anything on the cover being remotely similar to what's inside are, as always, questionable.

See the back cover image at one point of Black Lagoon featuring Roberta and Revy pushed up against each other in swimsuits.

.... Well, I think I know what this manga-ka is trying to push. Sex, after all, does sell. (And in Japan, nudity of the chest in media is A-OKAY!)

That said... WTF!? I know that they've somehow been able to get women here to grow their's even bigger than that (and it disturbs me that some people find that to be sexy *eyes his oversexed shipmates warily*) but that's still... *Sighs and shakes his head* I can see the new art style, but the Big Guns need to go. Anything that places that much emphasis on breasts is just thinly veiled smut to me.

Two folks on two different Usenet groups have independently compared the new manga designs to Adam Warren's work... and both of these people didn't care for Adam Warren's take on the Lovely Angels.

Visually, I have to admit the impression is there.

However, the writing will be where it's at.

I had no real problem with the visuals of the Warren!DP books. Even if some of them were patently ridiculous(Yuri's projection screen HAIR?)

But the writing was trying to be Ghost In The Shell with 500% more cheese, and it really, REALLY did not work, with Fatal But Not Serious just jamming the entire work so much with WTF? that it was kind of impossible to really recover from it.

Agreed.
When Toren Smith (?) was co-writing it, the added transhumanist elements were well done and coherent.  Once Warren was left to his own devices, he kept escalating with every new story until you couldn't really believe that it was the same setting as when it started...
...On the other hand, maybe the United Galactica was just approaching a singularity? ^.^

Maybe.
I enjoyed all his Dirty Pair stuff even if the later ones were a whole lot of WTF.
But I think the last time that they actually felt like classic Dirty Pair was the last time Toren Smith was working with him. That was on Dirty Pair, A Plague of Angels - the one with Cory Emerson the reporter tagging along.
