According to the author, he approached Sunrise for an actual license and was told that they weren't interested - dismissed pen and paper RPGs as "kid stuff".

Eh, not so much the case here. Sunrise simply flat-out refused. Yes, it is a niche market, but what they don't realize is that it is the same niche they occupy.
