All right, feel free to writhe in the torment of the cliffhanger in Dresden 12 here.

OK, I'll bite.
It seems likely that that happened as a result of another of those hits contracts on Dresden. Everyone forgot about them, but it was way too soon for the news that the hirers were dead and would't pay to make it through the grapewine. So far so good, it's reasonable. (of course, there may still be twists in the future)
What I'm not sure is if it was established who really hired the contracts. A faction of the Red Court would make sense, but why use THAT disguise? And if it was not a disguise, what gives?

I'm not sure that "Other People's Fanfiction" is the right place for this thread. I'm going to move it to General/General until such time as we create a "Literary Cricism" area.

Right-o. I just put it there for ease of access to the thread that spawned it.

That's my primary hypothesis as well, though it's not the first one I came up with. My first idea was that this hit was instigated by Lara, as she is likely the only one of Harry's enemies that would have an idea of where he would be at the moment. Given the amount of jumping around in the Nevernever Harry's been doing, he'd likely be very hard for a mortal hitman to track, and the hitman knew that he had access to Thomas Raith's boat, and to aim for his legs, which wouldn't be protected by his duster.

Hmm, luckily, by the time I get to reading Dresden book 12, book 13 will have been released in hardcover, maybe even in paperback. I recently finished #9 but there are several books in my que before I get to #10.

For extra fun, according to TVtropes the next volume of Dresden will be called Ghost Stories. Not a good sign.

It's Ghost Story, actually.
There will be a short story in this fall's anthology covering Murphy's reaction.

I'm predicting that Mac's past will be explained in the next book, seeing as it will be book 13, and there are quite a few 13s surrounding Mac.

So, I just took this weekend to read Small Favor, Turn Coat, and Changes all in one go and at the end of Changes one thing struck me.
Who has said that if they were going to kill Harry, they'd do it with a high powered rifle from far away.
Who has access to a giant ass font of knowledge to know where Harry could be at a given moment.
Now, there's just the matter of motive.

I thought of that too, but rejected it because of Ivy's inevitable reaction when she finds out. Plus it wasn't an immediatly leathal shot, which is what I would expect from him.

Right. Which while awesome is probably not real-time enough to track Harry for that kind of attack.

I suspect the shooting is a little bit of a Red Herring. One of the contracts the Eebs took out prior to their difficulties on the pointy bits of the Erlking.
What I think is more interesting is the voices in Harry's head as he sinks. I think the headaches of the last few books are the brain damage from the White Court battle finally healing; and through that, Lashiel (or rather Lash) returning to the already cramped confines of Harry's Brainpan. With the advice of an un-fallen fallen combined with the powers of the Winter Knight and his own not inconsiderable abilities, Maab and Maeve are going to find their pawn has become something considerably more potent and hard to control - this raises the possibility that Fix was the one doing the shooting, as hinted at in an earlier book; but I doubt that is the case.
Finally, I think the title Ghost Story may be another red herring; hinting at the plot, rather than Harry's personal condition.

Rev Dark Wrote:Finally, I think the title Ghost Story may be another red herring; hinting at the plot, rather than Harry's personal condition. Quite plausible to me. After all, other books have been titled 'Dead Beat' and 'Grave Peril'. The titles relate to the plot but this is a Wizard/Private Investigator we're talking about, it's not like it's the first time he's had to deal with ghosts. 8P

You know.. Lash IS a disembodied voice in Dresden's head and is a copy of a fallen spirit named Lasciel.. Technically a ghost Lasciel herself sorta counts as a ghost of her former self. It would be nice if Ghost Story was about Harry being forced to face the original thing to get back Lash.

If you want to get technical, Harry has been dead before too. Enough to create a ghost, anyway.

I just finished Side Jobs, (mutter receptionist, not letting me know I had a package, mutter mutter) and for those of you who don't already know, the last story in the collection is a brand new one set several hours after the end of Changes.

@Timote: It's not a red-herring, the summary says Harry is basically a spirit wandering around solving how he died, being pursued by the spirits of other thing's he's killed.

Oh, great. Now I wish I hadn't looked at this thread.

Say, could we talk about stuff we liked in Side Jobs, or would those be spoilers?

I particularly liked the 'Day Off' episode. And how Harry realize the and Murphy had been put under a spell... --------------------------------------
