It's a "re-imagining".

Also, "Joss Whedon, who created Buffy for the original 1992 film and subsequently guided her to TV success, will play no part in the project."

And the writer is currently "'fighting through' the script".

I'm not holding out a lot of hope for the quality of this movie, but I could be wrong...

They are trying to remake Buffy, with no interaction on behalf of the creator of the series?

It's worse than that. They bought the rights to the original movie, not the TV series. That means that whatever they reimagine, it won't have any of the TV series goodies that people love; Willow, Xander, Giles, etc.
